How tough was Steve Jones ?

Don't know them all, but a guy I know finished a little ahead of Steve Jones and heard that Nick Rose won the 'legends' race in 71:09(?). Not bad for a guy in his 50s.

I thought letsrun.com was visited by people who like running. So what's with the 'Who is Steve Jones?' question. He won Chicago, he won London. He used to be the World record holder.

It's like a basketball freak asking who Michael Jordan is. Or someone into (proper) football (not soccer) asking who Pele was.

Nick Rose had apprently been doing 70 - 80 miles per week - not entering into the Spirit of things at all!

It was a good run by Nick Rose, but could have been even better. He was on for a 67-68 min clocking for the first five miles or so, and still on for under 70 at the 10 mile point. I think he gave a bit of an incentive to some of the younger runners around him too - a few guys who consider themselves decent runners had to work a bit hard over the last few miles not to be beaten by the old guy.

Good to see Brisol AC get a medal in the open race and have Nick win the legends race (did Steve Jones compete for another UK club after Bristol AC). No doubt they won't be able to get a team together for the Six Stage though. Join Westbury guys, the foremost running club in the West Country.

Sub-70 would certainly have been VERY impressive. Bristol would be a real powerhouse in distance running. I think they still hold the course record for the National 12-Stage?

And wasn't Steve Jones a member of Newport?

Of course they can. He did. But he's still recovering from a world record in order to race against one of the most competitive road race fields in the whole world. No matter who you are or what you've done, a week later you're gonna feel that half marathon.

I think Jones did run for Newport, but as Old Boys said, he was part of Bristol's record setting 12 stage team. It's said round these parts (ie by Westbury members) that that was a "bought" team though, akin to Belgrave today. I'm not starting a Belgrave argument.

I heard Jonesy has the all-time record for the Boulder Res 10.4 loop. Legend has it he ran 52minutes for it on a Tuesday, and that Saturday/Sunday ran 2:10:04 at the Toronto Marathon losing a 10,000 bonus for a Sub 2:10 by 4 seconds. But then he got the race director so drunk that he agreed to give him the bonus anyway for being a generally funny guy.

Also heard he stopped to take a dump on that 52minute run, but it is unconfirmed whether he kept the watch running or not during said dump.

I think he used to spank Mark Coogan's ass all over Boulder county in daily workouts in 1994-95. Thus prompting Mark to start this thread.

And of course, Jones famously took a dump a couple of miles before the end of London Marathon win in 85. Still managed to catch Charlie Spedding and run low 2:08.

Starting recovery "jogs" at sub-6:00 pace is not tough. It's stupid.

And that story about vomiting after the first hill repeat is also doubtful.

First, even the best 800m runners in the world, who can build 20 mmol of lactic acid or more, do not usually throw up after their races (in fact, I have never heard of an elite 800 runner losing their lunch).

So I do not see how it is possible for Jones to do 1 400m hill repeat and then accumulate so much lactic acid that he has to relieve it by vomiting.

That either means he has a terrible buffering system, he had just eaten a three course meal, or the story is made up.

A lot of these stories frankly border on hero worship but the events described are in many cases somewhat stupid.
