Cal Poly was the team to screw it all up, they finished 9th at the West Regionals, getting beat by Washington State, due to half the team being sick, then they got 13th at Nationals. So in response to your

If a team is on the bubble of possibly making it to nationals, do coaches sometimes give up the chance to win their conference and rest their best runners and save them for regionals?
Is it considered a bigger deal to finish say first in a conference than barely making it to nationals.
In other words, how often do coaches try increase their chances to make nationals and give up a shot at winning or placing highly in the conference meet?

they lost one guy from their top 6 last year(andrew Dumm).

Two years ago I think this was the strategy used by Wisconsin's women at the Big Ten/Regional meets. They were only about 5th in the Big Ten, but finished 3rd at Regionals, with Michigan dominating the top spot, that was a pretty surprising result. They ran reasonably well at Nationals that year.
Here are the National rankings:
The Pac-10 might have some good teams but the rankings to not yet indicate any dominance. On the other hand, Iowa in 14th is in the bottom half of the Big 10. Also note how tight the rankings are for the men at the top; you can throw a hat over the top four. The differences also get pretty small at the high end for both groups. I think that we will have to wait until the Oregon meet before we get much information on the teams throughout the rankings, but especially at the top men (who else besides Wisco and Oregon are scheduled?).

Haha 'Cuse may get in on an at large bid but there is no shot they will beat Iona or Providence in the region. The program is getting better though and I say in 3 or four years they will be up there. I think there top guy could get in individually as well, but as for the team, the program is not experienced enough on the national level and don't quite have the depth of an Iona or Providence. I will also pick them to finish 3rd or 4th at BigEast. It's good to see the program improving though.

noone in the NE region can beat Iona--NOONE...
Providence will probably be top 3 but this year they are very beatable.
Syracuse will be up there, so will Columbia, and watch out for Marist College, that is my top 5 team prediction.
theres tons of talent in the Northeast but many of the programs dont seem to develop it the way that the real good ones do--it would make for a much tighter fight for the top spots.
What's the story with ND? Heard they are down this year.
