Wang Junxia's PRs/WRs?!?!?!

Was she a product of some sort of breeding program, like Yao Ming? Perhaps the State "gently nudged" her parents into falling in love, too.

Here's another possibility...like the Indian runner who recently failed a gender test, perhaps Ms. Junxia had another wang in addition to the one in "her" name.

I don't know if she was doped. However, she wasn't the only one who ran fast at that meet. Practically every athlete for whom I could find a comparable time far exceeded the performances that they ran before or after the '93 championships. To me the answer is obvious - the track was short!

The IAAF ratifies records. Wouldn't they know if the track was short? Plus, the same women were winning World Championship medals that year, so even though they don't have any times even close to that, they were still doing well.

I'm not denying that they were doing well, I think Wang's one of the greatest distance runners ever. But, from what little internet research I've done, I've never found anything that says that the IAAF was ratifying tracks back then. It would have been left up to the national federation to make sure it was accurate. I'm pretty sure that Chinese officials would have made sure that the track was found to be accurate when a bunch of their athletes just ran world records on it.

the short track theory makes no sense...check the men's results from the same meet...very medicore, in some cases, not much faster than the womens....the men's 10,000m was won in over 29:00.

Within months of their short stint at the top, I remember reading that many of the girls had to have their appendix's (spelled wrong I'm sure)removed. Whatever they took messed them up!!!

Don't be so quick to discount the "short track" theory. The men may simply have been really lousy. The "drugs" explanation frankly isn't enough to explain the unexplainable performances at that '93 meet. Something else was going on--short track, faulty timing, something. Looking at the entire history of the sport, those performances make no sense at all.

The short track theory could account for the performances at a range of distances at that meet.

Another possible explanation for the 10,000m time is that she only ran 24 laps. That's the only thing that can explain the crazy splits because if she ran 24 laps the final '5,000m' would look very fast and the final '3,000m' would look even faster.

Just think, she could have been competative with Rupp and Goucher (no mattet their bad races) at their last 3k

806 for 3k is about a 841 2 mile equivalent.
