To the idiot who said, "The US did not have all of it's top people in the 5000. There are so many that are better than Goucher."

Bottom line is he trained, made the team by placing top 3 (and beating all but the future 1st and 4th place WC finalists in the process), made the finalof WC, and accomplished something I'm guessing you can only dream of. Goucher is a legit professional who doesn't give a rats ass what some pathetic message boarder like you thinks.

Explain to me who wasn't there that would have been a "lock" to beat him? The only two I can think anyone could argue would be Webb and Hall, who were trying to make the team in their perspective "stronger" events.

You're right, Lagat does dust Goucher now, with ease. Makes you wonder hwo Lagat has gotten so much faster while Goucher has struggled mightily to improve on his times from college. Goucher himself wondered that around the 2004 Olympics.

Not bashing Goucher, but I'd like to think that Lagat is faster in large part because he's remained healthy for many years, while Goucher has had plenty of ups and downs due to various injuries, some running-related, some not.

Think they've all got thyroid issues.

When you have run as fast as Rupp have you´re certainly ready to move past NCAA. He can´t waste some of his most important developing years racing second-tier americans.

Well said. Why waste time racing second tier Americans when Rupp himself is poised to become a second tier puching bag on the world scene? Why waste time preping for a potential NCAA XC title when you can travel the world getting spanked by those with more talent and experience?

He did this same thing after his freshman year at Oregon when he ran faster than 28:15 or he did run 28:15. he raced all summer then the thyroid probably came up, but I guess they have that figured out now. however, salazar said in an interview that rupp was really tired and this was just in reference to daily training before the world champs. i wonder if they were planning to give him any time at all to rest up or if he's just going to go straight into training with the xc team. i wonder how many races he is running a year right now. i would deffinately think that it would be good for his body to get at least 2-3 weeks of rest. i think when canova trains his athletes, he doesn't tell them to do anything for a whole month after the track season. he says he tells his athletes(choge, songok) they can run on their own if they want but that they don't have to, but after a month they start getting back into training. i don't think there is anything wrong with letting rupp rest and it makes sense not to exhaust his body too much before xc season, but maybe they will use part of the season to rest him up and still get him primed to run some more 10k's. i don't think letting him get some good rest is going to stunt his growth as a runner, but maybe they are trying to train him like mottram is trained, where he is constantly only 6 weeks out from being in sub-13 shape, whereas for rupp that gauge could be a 28:00 10k. best of luck to him.
