You need plenty of food to recover from those types of exertion. I'm sure they have plenty of other things apart from the steak.

personally i feel like red meat is an essential part of my diet. i usually eat it in one form or another 2-3 times per week. if i go 2-3 weeks without eating red meat i can almost always notice my energy levels being sapped.
... and there are ways to mitigate the problems.
I will add that there is no one diet for all. A great diet for someone may not be good for someone else.
