Fayetteville, NC
Fayetteville, NC
i drove across the country many times and many different routes... the worst place i came across was a town called ashland, kentucky
maybe it was just because my car broke down or whatever but that place depressed the hell out of me
i went into some bar called wickies right in downtown, it smelled like puke everywhere
some old lady stumbled out of the bathroom and fell over
many were missing teeth
i didn't particularly like marshall, texas either
i apologize in advance to any residents of these town that i may have offended
Of all the people and cities I've been to Philadelphia is the rock bottom.
This is a slam-dunk....Dhaka, Bangladesh. What a $hithole - I had to spend two weeks there for work and, except for the nice people, it was horrible. We're talking a city of 10 million people with livestock grazing on piles of garbage in the streets, people pissing and crapping on the sides of the street, all coupled with intense heat and humidity. You can actually see a black cloud of air pollution over certain intersections b/c everyone uses leaded gas in their auto-ricksaws. By week two, every meal I ate made my stomach ache like crazy (and I can eat anything).
I second the vote for Fayetteville, NC. The whole place is filled with people only here for a few years at a time so most don't care what happens to the place. And the fact that everyone drives like they're 80 and live in Florida.
Benson - no one really will be able to top your pick. Period.
But in North America, I vote for Detroit.
Funny, in 1991 I had a blowout going through Ashland KY myself and had to stop and get it fixed. It didn't seem like the people there had much going on in their lives.

What the heck is up with people saying Tulsa?! Have you actually lived there?! Riverside is at least 10 miles (plus more on the West bank) and MARKED every half mile.... you can do any sort of workout needed, whether a long run, progression run, mile repeats, etc.. On windy days for doing 5-6 mile repeats, I'd park in the middle, run one direction for my warmup, and then turn around and have the wind at my back the entire workout-- awesome! At LaFortune Park you can do loop after loop for long runs on varied terrain and pick up drinks after each loop (or just stop at any of the countless water stops). The running community is lively.... there is no other place in America with more USATF certified courses than Tulsa. Even the dinkiest 5Ks are certified and accurately marked every 1K (with timers at each marker), which means more feedback in races on pace. There's plenty of hills in the South part if you want hills. Nice tracks (TU, Jenks....). For the most part, the city is clean and classy. Cost of living is affordable, and like I've said on other similar threads it seems like a great place to raise a family with good public and private schools, playgrounds, arts, cultural events, sport teams (~Union, Jenks, Broken Arrow, Owasso). The city is one giant grid and incredibly easy to navigate. The weather is just like any other mid/southwest city (can be very cold or very hot/humid), but hey it's nearly impossible to get hit by a tornado because of the Arkansas River. My only knock is some of the roads are too narrow and need major repair, but what city doesn't have that problem?
So what is so bad about Tulsa??

I grew up in Ironton, OH (another piece of shit town), which lies 5 minutes from Ashland. Your sentiments are correct.

Detroit is far from perfect, but in this category, it doesn't stand a chance compared to Gary, Indiana. I'd be curious to hear from anyone who has actually been to Gary and can find a crappier city.

I've lived in both southeastern PA and Maryland. For my money, Philadelphia--and for that matter DC--feel like resorts compared to Baltimore.
ahh yes, many of us have glorious places we grew up...i'm from not far from scranton, pa. - while I enjoyed growing up there, it is not generally known for it's pleasantries

People have different reasons but it is all opinions. The city I live in is on this thread but I love it so it doesn't bother me at all.My vote is New Orleans. When I was there I remember seeing a bum poop on the sidewalk. The rest of the city smelled just as bad.

Who to nominate?...so many possibilities! I can't really speak much for other countries (although, I would give a big nod to Juarez, Mexico....Jesus Christ). So here are a few I've been to that I'd like to offer up for consideration....
1). Stockton, CA
2). Easley, SC (near Clemson)
3). Whiteville, NC (near Fayetville, which also sucks)
4). Pearl River, LA (I can't say New Orleans. While the poverty, heat, and crime make it a consideration, the city is too interesting to call it one of the worst. However, any number of little dump towns outside of New Orleans qualify.)
Vegas, dont get the hype at all.
Stockton, CA
Fresno, CA
Tacoma, WA
Gary, IN
El Paso, TX
Oregon has the biggest bunch of pre-jack off artists and Nike tools on planet earth.Go hug a sweatshop and DUI, methheads

Ahmed Johnson and the Pearl River Plunge!
oh, let me also throw Wilkesboro, NC. Anytime I have ever stopped in that town for any reason, I always feel like I want to get back in my car and leave as soon as possible. That place is like a breeding kennel for methed-out nascar fans.
