Actually, Living in the Past went to a different private high school that was a rival of St. John's in the same league. He won the 2 mile in the league meet the same year the aforementioned Olympian Paul Geis won the mile. Geis had a high school mile best of 4:12.8, run indoors in the Astrodome, and also ran 3 miles in 14:47 in high school long before that distance was commonly run in Texas high school competition.

St. John's has VERY high recognition. Its graduates populate Stanford, Tufts, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Duke, Berkeley, MIT, and even a few un-snooty good schools. Across the country, if you enter an ISAS school (Independent Schools Natl Association) and mention St. John's, you are welcome and saluted. The "and I'm Catholic" remark is sort of "out there," considering that many of such schools with "Saint" in their name are NOT denominational. St. John's is NOT a Catholic school, and never was.

I assumed he was referring to the median SAT scores for entering freshmen for colleges. I was wrong. I did not read his later post where he specifically mentions he meant high school. I added the "and I'm Catholic" part because I again assumed he was referring to colleges and I know most quality Catholic colleges. It's true, not all schools that have "Saint" are Catholic, but more often than not that is the case.

Again, as far as the answer to the subject is concerned, it's not St. John's.

Also, I found it interesting that Thomas Jefferson had the highest median SAT score. They were in my district in high school. Score one for public schools. They've had a fair amount of success the past 10 years in track/cross and have got to be the best running and academic high school in the nation currently.

OK. Roxbury Latin is the winner, since someone from there won an Olympic gold medal in a field event in the 19th century.

St. John's of Houston is number two overall (if you include field events). Number two is still not a bad place to be. It's number one if you include only running events. And this is, after all, a running website. I don't see too many pole vault threads on this site. So Roxbury Latin gets an asterisk.

Wow, amazing story. If only four guys qualified for the final, I guess nobody was eliminated in the heats. All you had to do to get a medal was show up. Sort of like in our public school system today.

The race itself was actually quite close, as both runners were given the time of 17.6. The gold medalist was Thomas Curtis, an electrical engineering student from MIT who helped develop the toaster.

There were two heats with 4 qualifying for the final. When Hoyt and Goulding (won his heat, by the way - he was apparently helping a marathoner when the race was going on) didn't show up they didn't plug back in any of the other four, possibly because they didn't keep track of which was fastest?

True, you mentioned a high school in the first post. However, you didn't say it was a high school and those that live thousands of miles away don't typically know of every high school in the country, even if it is one as apparently well regarded as St John's.

Just for the record, did you know of TJHSST before this thread? I'll assume that you'll lie and say you did, but as it's in VA and public, I seriously doubt that. However, if top high schools is what gets your rocks off, just remember that TJ is best. As you said earlier, this is about superiority.

He meant that you changed the rules by trying to focusing only on running when the subject clearly states finalist, not running finalist. I had not heard of Thomas Jefferson, but so what? I see no reason to lie about it. I am glad to learn about it and to know that I am better informed. I think it's great that a public high school has the highest average SAT in the nation.

A lot of people are missing the point of this thread. It was meant to be a send up of the thread called "which state is the most well known worldwide?"

I trash Texas in that thread, and for good reason. I pretend to be a Texas booster on this thread, but the truth is that I really don't give a damn.

As for the asterisk, I think it still remains because of Hoyt's ambiguous situation. It's important to point out that he qualified for the finals but wasn't actually in the finals. Hence the asterisk.

Gotcha. It was just a clarification. Maybe you've got to be part of that ISAS world for those schools to seem to have so much recognition. In the mid 90s, though, St. John's was outscoring Andover and Exeter, and had more national merit scholars per capita. I saw that stat at Catlin Gabel School in Portland, Oregon.

Most people don't have to be told that it's a high school rather than a college. A college with a median SAT of 1420 would be known by just about everyone. For example, almost everyone has heard of Georgetown University.
