humanity will last for another 50 years unless something really dramatic happens (earth somehow collides with nemesis). even a nuclear superwar will have survivors that will last longer than 50 years. 50,000 is a completely different story. In my opinion, if we confine ourselves to earth we invite destruction, much like animals that are native to only a very small place much more easily become extinct. we need to colonize!!

Yes humanity will exist in 50,000 years. I don't understand all the apocalyptic paranoia. In fact I've really had enough of you all, I'm going back to my cryogenic pod.

Japan has the best chance of being around 50,000 years from now. The current government of Japan is 2,600 years old, the oldest government in the world. The current head-of-state, Emperor Akihito, is the 125th emperor of Japan in the same blood line that began in 660 B.C., the oldest dynasty in the world.

Surely it's just a matter of time before there is a nuclear attack. It's hard to believe that the attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were isolated incidents that won't happen again. The weapons available now are capable of so much more destruction. Sooner or later some madman is going to launch a few, and they may or may not be intercepted in time. I'm not being paranoid. I don't sit around dreading this all the time. It just seems completely plausible that with nuclear weapons floating around the globe in who knows who's posession, something bad will happen eventually.

So, in terms of humanities extinction, I don't think a nuclear war will extinguish 100% of the population. Just cut it down significantly.

But then there is the possibility of an asteroid collision. Potentially more devastating than a nuclear bomb. But there again, even though the population will take a massive hit, life will find a way to continue.

And finally, there are those who believe there will be a rapture and an armageddon that will see all life find it's place in heaven or hell. I'm guessing this is not a likely scenario.

While the dropping of nuclear bombs on Japan was an extreme act, at the time it was believed that it was going to take extreme action to get the Emperor's attention. I believe that estimates at the time stated that it was going to take another 1-2 years and hundreds of thousands of Allied soldier's lives to defeat the Japanese army. Who by the way, was the Imperial agressor in that war, remember Pearl Harbor, the Japanese invasion of China, Korea, all of Indo-China??????

I believe that the reason the USA has not used "The Bomb" since then is because we know of the devastating effects is has, both physically and psychologically to the US citizens and the world citizens.

The USA probably has the worst track record for victories in war of the modern time, suffering defeats at the hands of Canada, Vietnam and Iraq. I’m not American and feel very sorry for what has happened to your country over the past 8 years.

That being said, 'we' will most definitely be around in 50,000 years. Imagine what humans would have evolved into by then. They will not at all resemble there 2007 AD counterparts. Hopefully by then we have made incomprehendible technological gains (i.e." learning how to use gravity for high speed transportation and energy or something). Hopefully by 52,007 we have lost all forms of religion, that would surely curb the threat of further frivolous wars that we are witnessing now. Americas imperial state will have no choice but to die out as poorer countries become industrialized. Just think how much technology has changed in the last 200 years or even in the last 30 years, we can’t even begin to imagine what will exist 25000 thousand years from now let alone doubling that time period.

Honestly we could not comprehend what the world would be like. I think if we can make it another 500 years the technology we would acquire by then would ensure our safety for much longer than 50,000 years.

Our track record for victories is because of our politics, the US has not tried to win a war since WWII. Look what our soldiers did to the suposedly great armies of Sadam Hussein. The US is not imperialistic in that it wants to "rule" foreign countries, I believe it's the US goal to give every other country the freedom to choose it's own government. Sounds idealistic, but that's is what is in the heart of the American people. Otherwise, how can you explain the US not establishing it's own governors/dictators all over the world. I know that some will argue that that's what we already do, and to some extent, that is probably true, the US tries to put in place those who believe in freedom for the people. We are definitely not a Totalitarian state such as the USSR and China.

Don't feel sorry for the US, for our last 8-years. By that comment, I'm sure you're taking a shot at George W. Bush, but for all his faults, I'm more more glad we had him at he helm for 9-11 than that idiot Al Gore. But that's for another thread.

I would expect that some sort of cataclysmic event, such as asteroids, volcanos, earthquakes, will have more impact on what happens to the human race than what we do to ourselves. However, there are a lot of academicians/scientists that make the song "in the year 2525" appear to much more of a possibility.

I'm not worried though, I believe that Jesus is my saviour and I'll be spending eternity in heaven. If I'm wrong about that, then I will have lived a good life, but if I'm right about it, then I guess you will eventually become a believer. Only problem is, you'll be wishing you were with me.
