I remember the 600 yards in about 6th grade. In hs we had to run a mile (well, it ended up being a 1600 because the teacher was an idiot). Anyway, we "trained for" a mile by running a 400, an 800, a 1200, and then "THE MILE" over 4 successive weeks. We didnt do a 400 each day or anything. We did a 400 - ONCE - during the week. Next week, we did ONE 800, etc. It was hilarious. For the 400 I took off like a bat out of hell and some kid yelled "guess who's going to die?" I ran about 55 and one kid was about 60. Then everyone else was way back. By the time we ran the mile, the kid that had run the 60 asked if i could help him break 6 min. That's admirable, so i ran 90s for the first two laps. When he couldn't hold on he told me to just go ahead and run for myself. I finished in about 5:15 and as I was finishing, i lapped a couple of fat girls FOR THE THIRD TIME! I finished 1600 about a second faster than they finished 400. Pathetic. The teacher couldn't believe anyone in hs could run so fast. She was freaking PE teacher!!!! This is the sad state of kids' health these days.
