Lots of Brando references, but none for On The Waterfront? IMO, that was his best performance. Also, how about some love for Will Smith in Ali? Denzel somehow beat him out for the Oscar that year but Big Will should have definitely won it. Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man gets an honorable mention.

Yeah right, his performance was predictable, flat and played out. The movie sucks in general because it is completely unfaithful to the novel and far far far less powerful.

Most people will tell you either O'Tolle in LOA or Brando in SND, but my vote has to go to Robert Duvall in Apocalypse Now. Yeah he's only in the movie for a few minutes, but my god, what a presence he commands for those few moments he's on screen. It's amazing to hear people talk about Duvall now days. So many people think he is just the guy who always plays the sorta loony old man from the South. Robert Duvall is one of the greatest actors of all time.
Another fine performance that is more recent was Hugh Jackman in The Fountain. The movie didn't get much respect, and for understandable reasons, but I though hands down Jackmans performance was the best of last year. And yes, I saw Last King of Scotland and Venus, and I still think this. The emotional depth that his character required, and his ability to pull it off, really surprised me.
Homer Simpson in "The Simpson's Movie." He was somewhat cartoonish, but the role called for that. Well done! Definitely Oscar worthy.

I agree that Pacino was good in Dog Day Afternoon but I thought he was even better in Glenn Gary Glenn Ross (the salesman). Actually he was pretty good in Devils Advocate too (I love the way he said: "I'm a fan of Man."). A pretty good actor all around.
We must be twins, seperated at birth. LOA is my fav flick, and GGGR is my fav Pacino film. GGGR is sadly overlooked. The script is absolutely wonderful.

Ok. Russell Crowe in The Insider is the best performance by an Actor. Duvall is my favorite though.
Duvall completely embodies Augustus MacRae in "Lonesome Dove," one of the great single performances ever. Of course, Augustus MacRae is also just a great fictional character.
His role as Kilgore is one-dimensional but is interesting. He's also great in "The Apostle" and in "The Godfather."
I don't like Streep in "Sophie's Choice"--too many tics. The book is so staggeringly powerful that I just could not like the movie.
I thought Penn's best performance was in "21 Grams" but that may be because Naomi Watts was so great.
Brando is great in so many roles. I thought Nicholson's "Chinatown" role is his best.
