I look in my training log at the things I did and I would not dare suggest someone else do them. No coach told me to. But if one of my athletes was good enough and right enough to do those kinds of things, then, well there are exceptions.

The OP is a guy that is hoping to break 4 hours. Let's not loose sight of that. Maybe he can join the ranks of other serious hopefuls like ourselves and experiment with both ideals (low mileage/shorter longrun/more mp tempo vs. higher mileage/medium long run). My guess is that if he follows either path, he will at least break 4. I can tell you that as a mid mileage person, I had better luck with the Hansons' plan.
