Did any of you geniuses ever wonder why your local health department has certain requirements for restrooms, including those little signs that say "Employees Must Wash Their Hands After Using the Facilities"? Just Google Dr. Charles Gerba and see what you find.

For all you folks who are so against washing your hands (and my, it IS such a disgusting habit, isn't it) PLEASE do the rest of humanity a favor and DON'T get a job in the food service industry.

I hardly ever wash my hands after I take a piss but at work I always make sure I do before. My hands get used a lot more and are exposed to more germs than my dork.

Jim, did *you* Google Dr. Gerba? I did, and his research seems to support the view that you should stay away from bathroom sinks, which have more fecal matter on them than toilet bowls or toilet seats. Personally, I wash after a visit to the stall -- but I turn off the sink with a towel. After pissing, you would have to be a seriously misguided germaphobe to venture anywhere near a public bathroom sink. I don't care how sweaty your ass is.

now, i won't venture to guess what kind of swamp-ass sweatshop you work in, but my office is air conditioned. my underwear isn't soaked from stem to stern, and dry cotton isn't exactly a highway for bacteria. the only areas that ever show even a slight sign of sweat are the rear down to the taint (WOO! said it again!) and they are certainly areas my hands don't touch outside the shower.

oh, and to anyone presuming to know everything about my hygiene habits from this one thread, i'd like to add this: i wash my hands many times a day, as necessary. for example- after i eat, i wash my hands because they've likely touched food and/or my mouth, both of which are bacterial breeding grounds. also, i wash my hands (in the shower or not) after i run and they're covered with sweat that has likely run down from (at some point) my armpits, where apocrine glands make more bacteria-friendly sweat. that's a couple of examples of times that require a handwashing MUCH MORE than touching dry waistband or dry toilet paper.

I can't believe people are actually questioning why you need to wash your hands after taking a shit.

How long does it take to wash them? Why is this such an inconvenience? Why do you think health departments require it in eating establishments?

I agree with that people should wash their hands, but this defense is terrible. How the heck would you make a glove out of a paper towel? That wouldnt work at all!

oddly enough, i had to take a dump at work today after reading this thread. It was a long one too. Anyways, i was there for like 15 minutes and 8 people came in and out of the bathroom 7 to take a piss and 1 to crap. out of the 7 pissers, 2 washed their hands. the guy who took a crap didnt wash his hands either. So 3/8 people washed their hands. Well 4/9 cuz i washed my hands.

Count me in as a borderline fanatic hand washer! Or more accurately, "hand sanitizer," since regular old soap dried my hands out, and sanitizer doesn't. I can't imagine going back out into the world after using any bathroom without some sort of cleansing.

I teach stringed instruments to over 300 students at my school, and my hands are on little hands constantly. I have a huge bottle of sanitizer near my desk and use it after touching any little fingers that may have been someplace I'd rather not know about...

And I have no idea why my Paleo Diet link popped up. I got rid of it before posting! Computers....

No I do not...and I do not plan to in the future.

I don't generally wash my hands when leaving the bathroom either, but it's not some personal quest against handwashing. I simply am not touching anything dirty! I bet your shoelaces are much dirtier than toilet paper or your pants zipper... so do you wash your hands every time you tie your shoes? Why not? How long does it take to wash them? Why is this such an inconvenience?
