The guy lived in the forest and trained by himself, existed outside of the social pressures of his communist government and days, and just thoroughly enjoyed the experience with success. The guy had a heart of f***ing gold---discreetly giving away one of his Olympic golds to a defeated Ron Clarke? Come on now; Mottram ain't got shit on Zatopek.

He's kicked with Gebreselassie before running under 13 for 5k, he's beat both Bekele's, ran under 13 at Commonwealths, is fun to watch and a gutsy racer. Guys like him is what track and field needs to get people to come to the stadium, get people enthousiastic for long distance events. What do you want more? Never heard balls before, wow, welcome to the world of running, because you'll need some.

Of course we judge their character by what we read about them. Here's what we know about Zatopek's character: He worked harder than anyone around. He fell in love with one woman and remained true to her his whole life. He once gave Ron Clarke one of his Olympic gold medals simply because he felt Clarke deserved it. His life was made much harder by not allowing himself to be a poster boy for the communist government yet he never caved and played the game.

I liked the interview. He had some personality. When he starts posing and banging his chest like some of these obnoxious sprinters then he'll lose me.
I find it pretty funny that some are being so critical of Mottram for doing the same thing that Pre did to gain his popularity.

Ritz is a child compared to Mottram, a child. Ritz will NEVER match Mottram's times or performances. Mottram shows up to races that MATTER. Not some NY road runner 10k road race at the beginning of the season.
Mottram would handle kennedy as well. Give Buster time, he hasn't even contested two Olympics yet. Athens was his first major championship of any kind. Plus, Mottram is basically the world representative for "Not Africa" against an entire continent of utter dominance that is known as Africa. Africa had only a few good runners against Shorter and indeed was just started to show signs of it's soon-to-be-dominance in the 1970's. Plus which, almost all of Africa boycotted the 76 Games so they didn't even factor at all. The level of competition that modern runners face is greater than it has ever been.
Someone also mentioned that Webb's mile PR was only 0.06 seconds faster than Mottram's. I like both those guys but isn't that maybe a testament to Mottram's talent instead of Webb's, if Webb the miler only has Mottram the distance runner by 0.06 at his own thing?
I wouldn't say Ritz will never match Mottram's performances, considering that the "NY road runner 10k road race" you mock was one in which Mottram tried and failed three times to get the course record -- and in which Ritz succeeded in getting the record.
Mottram is great, maybe one of the greatest. Ritz is great too, not at Mottram's level yet, but getting there after having his first big block of injury-free training time since high school.
Mottram is fast and hot (with an Aussie accent as a bonus). What more could one want?

Mottrem does have his WC bronze. All you have to show is bitterness borne of jealousy and frustration at having to use a blow up doll for intimate contact.
Just to clear up things for the guy who said Buster was clearly upset after the Reebok Grand Prix--he actually handled it quite well. The the flotrack guy said something like, "So not such a good race, right?"
Mottram said something to the effect of, "Well, obviously I always want to win, but this wasn't all that bad. I'm a 5k guy who hasn't quite hit end of season form yet and I got outkicked by two of the best milers the world has ever seen. I'll get over it and take some scalps later."
And then he did the next week.
Obviously I was just paraphrasing, but this what I remember (the profanity didn't help or hurt) and I don't think he could have handled it any better.

Why are Americans so jealous of Mottram?
Perhaps because he has more character in his left pinky than all the Americans combined. And he doesn't make excuses. There is nothing worse than an American standout earning 250k /year making excuses when he doesn't race well. "I had blisters." "I had walking pneumonia." "I hurt my foot playing soccer" etc.
If Mottram loses, he accepts it, and learns from it, and moves on. There are some Americans who could learn from that...
