High socks make your calves appear bigger.
Bekele has some truck legs, too.
If you look though they're mostly really huge about the quads which at times look scary big!
Out of interest, how big are other distance runners' calves, in terms of circumference? Mine are on the large side, about 14 inches. I feel like this certainly isn't helping my running...
I definetly feel like my calves are weighing me down. They are about 16 inches in circumference and my quads are 19 inches in circumference. I'm also a pretty short guy 5'7" and I weigh about 138 just because of my leg weight.
It has been tough because i am not genetically inclined to distance running, but I have worked my ass off and run about a 15:45 5k.
I think Todd Williams had some massive calves. He was pretty good.
The answer is not small calves. The answer is genetics + hard work + not getting injured + luck/providence + guts/motivation/inner drive/balls
anyone ever date a girl with "tree trunk" calf syndrom?

Anybody else think that looks like a body double for Bekele? Face just isn't right.

You mean Cankles (calf merges with ankle)? Or the ever dreaded Thankles (thigh mergles with ankle)?
Both are bad. I've seen them, but NEVER dated someone with either.
paul tergat has about the smallest calfs i can think of.
I once read a study conducted about calf sized. Basically it compared large-calved runners to small-calved runners and in the end deduced that small calves equated to a higher running efficiency (which makes sense because you're moving less mass from a point fairly far from your center of mass).
In either case, the study seemed sort of flawed, because it seemed that all of the small-calved athletes were east african and all of the large-calved athletes were european.
I guess the study could have also concluded that black athletes were better than white.
Why does Cragg look like a goblin in this pic???

you dont see many dudes with genetically large calves that are excellent runners...
i had a friend in HS who REALLY wanted to be a good runner..he trained hard, ate right, ran high miles...and had massive calves....they were easily the thickest part of his leg, as the rest of him was rail thin...
he never amounted to more than an 18:00 5k...
I'm not saying large calves actually cause one to be slow, just that they are a good indication of what you might be predisposed (or not predisposed) for..
haven't you guys ever seen pictures of elite US distance guys? Tim Broe's got some big ass calves, so does Solinsky. It's not just Americans either, Alistair Cragg also has huge calves.

im female and i have 13 calves in circumference
i guess i have big calves, but its completely all muscle
despite that, i can still run pretty fast in distance
on a side note though, my calves are about 5 inches away from my ankle
*13 inches
my calves are 11.5 inch. at the largest point so i guess i have pretty small calves.
and at the midpoint of my thighs they are 16.5 inches in circumfrence.
i am almost a kenyan.
i have big calves and am not afraid to admit it
definitley NOT cankles though...ew...lol im proud to say i got voted for the hottest legs award in my class
they're almost 13 inches in circumference....like 12 3/4 and i dont think they slow me down
A lot of people are giving just their calf measurements. I don't think you should just measure calf circumference. It would give misleading results.
Wouldn't it be better to examine calf size RELATIVE to leg length?
For example, I'm 6'2" have long legs, and my calves are about 13". I look like a waif. I know someone who is 5'5" who looks stocky and looks like he has big calves. But, the circumferences are the same. We would be treated as identical in some pseudo-study but our leg structure/build is vastly different.
this guy from Butler has huge calves and he is staying up with the best.

16 inches on the calves no one will beat me....15:40 5k
