The Mulder-Scully relationship was the best part of the show. I would want them to get together, but then I didn't. When they finally did kiss after 7 years or however long it was, it just wasn't the same.

Mulder: "I was told once that the best way to regenerate body heat was to crawl naked into a sleeping bag with someone else who is already naked."

Scully: "Maybe if it starts raining sleeping bags, you might get lucky."

Ol' coach Reese, toward the end of a late-season workout, called Pookie Wilson over to the track, put a hand on his shoulder and walked him over to the 300 meter mark, or maybe 10 meters shy of that. He said, "O.K. Luke, when you get here in the 800 Andrade will be right in front of you. Put it into high gear and win." I looked up at Reese and asked, "That's coaching?" I remember him saying to me on the sly, "He's so dumb -- that's all he needs to know to win."

Well, he certainly wasn't "dumb," but Reese had the scenario down perfectly. That's exactly what happened in the race.

Nice anecdote about Luke Wilson. Where was Kellogg when this was going on? Wasn't he around?

Kellogg was hanging out. Over by the finish line with a bunch of Reese's sprinters as I recall. They used to sort of wallow there quiverring from the lactic acid bath Reese would administer. I remember Kellogg and I referring to what we called "Reese's Pieces" (or was that years later in retrospect? ... heck, I can't remember) -- intermittant circles of vomit strewn here and there on or near the track, calling cards of sorts, left by speedsters. It worked for them. But Kellogg would have none of that when dealing with the distance guys. They went anaerobic toward the end of the season when 'loggs would put them through "blasts," but that was about it. There was a brutal 4 mile loop we'd run at a threshold pace that really made good runners out of everyone. I remember Gilbert Prado joining me of a 20-miler one weekend just to add the mileage Loggs thought was so important. He resumed the next week as though nothing had happened, running that 4-miler in about 21:15 with plenty to spare. I think Kellogg's guys that year had some built-in dedication and would have done whatever to improve their times.

George Young is the freakin man....that story is perfect...him just hanging out in mexico...

did cole happen to say what Young is up to these days? I think i'd like to have a beer with him more than any other distance star.
