Well, once seems fine in my experience, but I can say that four times the night before a 14 mile trail race with a lot of climbing pretty much takes all of the bounce out of your legs. Maybe three times would have been okay, I'll have to experiment

ok then, well i'm not sure what it is then, but i think having sex must have had an affect on my competitive drive or something anyway
I'd say a lot of your competitive drive comes, comsciously or subconsciously from your desire to get laid. So in the afterglow, it's kinda like "mission accomlished," in a sense. Also, with the whole sensory experience of a freshly sexed bed on my mind, no single fiber of my being would want to be on a track or in a track house for a good while.
Pre-race sex is definitely a legitimate discussion point. Some of my teammates used to swear by abstaining the night before, saying that pre-race sex depleted energy stores. I can't really comment on that because they were obviously refering to homo-sex (you know who you are). But I have trialed the theory with hetero-sex, using both the night-before and morning-of session. The morning-of race day trial resulted in a poor race outcome. I went out way too fast, put 50 meters between me and the field, and died at the 6k climb.
