He doesn't run that poorly at nationals. There are several other guys he has to contend with that are just as good as he is at everything except running solo. At least he's getting in good enough shape to run that fast, which is better than losing at nationals and never having run fast times (which describes everyone except for a handful of people in all of college track). If we're going to knock him for not winning nationals, the knock on the other guys might be that they don't have what it takes to run that hard without help.
Has he ever heard of periodization?
College hopefully won't be anything more than a stepping stone for this guy. He's got many seasons as a pro to figure out how to hit his peak shape at the time of the important races. Right now he's probably just trying to develop as a runner, and he's doing a mighty fine job of it. Hardly anybody peaks at the right time in every season anyway.
