Any table is at best an approximation of comparable values. The mercier tables, which I am quite familiar with, are rather dubious on many counts. They are not very accurate for long distance equivalencies IMHO.
The reality is that each athlete is an individual and will rarely run equivalent times across events. For instance, the athlete might be more gifted towards the endurance side of things and so will run a much higher point total for longer events.
From a personal perspective, I have run 13:54 and 28:46. Based on the points quoted, I should have been running my 10,000m 45" slower. I could never run close to the 3000m equivalency.
All to say, go for it buddy. Train well and consistently for a couple of years and join a talented group of runners to pull you along. Get some good coaching and your goals are not out of reach.
