malmo, You don't see this? I see 90% of runners whining and usually the better the runner,
When I was an athlete, no, I've never seen or heard any of it. It would be safe to say I ran with a different crowd than you. The internet has been an eye opener for me, because the web has exposed me to an attitude that is completely alien to my experience. Oddly enough, the center of it is Boulder, Colorado of all places. Does anyone in Boulder get along with anyone else? I don't get it?
Dragline: "Luke can you really eat fifty egg?"
Lucas Jackson: "Nobody can eat fifty egg."
Malmo, I'll ask again. When you were an athlete, you NEVER heard other athletes giving self denigrating comments prior to a race to take the pressure off themselves? I heard it many times, and the crowd I ran with is not so different from yours. In fact, a few are probably the same people. I've even heard some of our top athletes, who I respect greatly, say things like, "I ran ok considering I haven't started speedwork yet'" or similar statements. The friends wife was referring to top U.S. roadracers at the time. I see more and more of this today, with even our top guys and gals. They routinely offer why they are 'not quite 100%'. I admire the old school guys who lace 'em up and go at it. You lost me on the Boulder rant. maybe you can clue me in.
arthur, you'll have to excuse me, I thought this was about whining, not self-defecating wit? And the center of the track and field universe of whining is Boulder. What is it about the place? It seems everyone there hates everyone else.
I dunno. Seemed like a nice round number.
Malmo, My apologies for not making it clearer. I intertwine the two when the wit becomes almost like a crutch when overused. Thanks for the clarification thing on Boulder. Not that it takes much to confuse me, but I am not in tune with the persona of the place.
On a run while standing at a light waiting to cross the road.
Person in car: "Getting a good workout today?" (puffs on cig)
Me: "Yeah, 18 miles."
Person in car: "No shit..."
Then the light changed and I continued on.

self-defecating? That's something children do, not adults.

Actually, I believe it is...
"It works like this: the train moves, not the station."
Probably the coolest thing said to me:
Fat guy in a big ole black van: "Aren't you the guy I saw running a few hours ago? How far are you going"
Me: "22 miles"
Fat guy in a big ole black van: "Holy shit, man. Rock on."

Technically, it would be a function of the reference point. If you are the train, you might say
"the station moves, not the train."
Then again, you may be the boy chasing after the train, in which case
"the train moves, and the station moves."
Techincally, it would be the actual quote from the movie. Put down your slide rule and pick up the remote!
