Using my canadian math; if it started in 1876 and there was 111, that brings us to 1987!! So they must have missed 20. I think the buffalo turkey trot is definitley older but not continuous. In two weekends it will be the 113 ATB but there have been only 111 Turkey trots.
I think you should have it thirty-seven fifty-ninths the length of a marathon. Because thirty-seven fifty-ninths of a marathon just seems like it would be the ultimate race distance. I believe it would separate the weekend warriors from the true conquerors.

As long as you also replace the mile event with the 1200.

I can tell you a little about Hamilton's Around the Bay Race. I have run it! It was first run was on Christmas Day in 1894, three years before the first Boston Marathon was run. Gord Dickson, one of Canada's great runners from the past won the race seven times in the 50s and 60s.
The draw bridge has been up on two occassions. The first was in 1961 to let a sail boat pass through. No runners got over the bridge before it rose. We were stopped for about 4 minutes according to my running log.
The bridge was also up during the race in 1996. I understand that about 40 runners got across before the bridge rose.
I greatly enjoyed my one race Around Hamilton Bay. I hope to go back and jog or just watch that race some day.

I was at a golf fund raiser last summer and almost fell out of my chair when I found out I was sitting beside Bill Crothers! Super nice guy. I live in east york so I could relate a bit to the training venues.
Hope you make it out to around the bay soon. Hopefully the weather will be decent like last year.
I visit London, Ontario and Grand Bend a couple of times a year in the summer. Maybe I will be lucky enough to be in Toronto for the opening of the new University of Toronto track this summer. It would be great fun to see my East York teammates and other Ontario runners from the 50s and 60s.

I've only been waiting 20 years for a real track in downtown Toronto! Then they re-do UCC, birchmount and St. Mikes almost all at the same time!
We do a 30 km in the spring and fall (late March/Sept) and it's very popular for people doing Boston or NYC - good tuneup distance, a common practice is to try to run marathon goal pace for basically 3/4 of the distance.
That said, years ago we put on a 1/3 marathon (just because we had a loop course that was almost exactly that distance). It wasn't that popular, but admittedly was pre-marathon boom.

I am glad that you enjoyed the Bruce kidd thread. Telling their story is the best way to retain the legacy of Fred Foot and the East York Track. Bruce Kidd and Bill Crothers will be at the opening of the new Varsity Stadium. I assume that David Bailey and some of the others will be there too. Our last reunion was at the Cambridge Classic Mile in 2004. I am glad that I got to see and talk to Canadian 1956 Olympian Dick Harding in Cambridge. The whole 1956 Canadian Olympic sprint relay team were members of the East York Track Club. Fred Foot was the coach of the Canadian Olympic Track and Field Team in 1956.
Dick Harding died suddenly a few weeks ago.
Now back to the Around the Bay Race. In 1961, we only had three from the EYTC running that day. Team scoring required 4 runners. One of our teammates, Jim Snider, was at the race and wanted to run to fill out a team. I discouraged him because he ran mainly shorter races. It turned out that we would have won the team race if Jim had finished last. Jim later ran a 15Km race under 50 minutes beating me. He still gives me a hard time about my bad advice that day.

We used to do 2400 in the Canadian Military PT test. Everyone across the Canadian Forces was familiar with 2400 times. My best was 6:44.

Here is the info on road races that have been around a while:
I probably wouldn't run it, because I don't leave near where you are and my mom probably would not drive me that far, even if I do get my license in time and offer to share the driving.
I once ran a cross country course that was 2.96 miles. Distance doesn't matter in racing unless you want to compare times and even that is hard. Is one course harder than the other...who knows?

I would have interest in a 3/4 marathon.
Timing would be key.
1) Host it about 6-8 weeks prior to a major marathon in the area.
and / or
2) Host it during a particularly slow period for marathons - such as early or late summer (may-jun or Aug-Sep).

Would I run it? No. As previous posters have stated, make it a 20 miler or a 30K and maybe. Three-quarter marathon? That's just silly if you ask me.
Maybe I'll put on a 10.55K and call it a half-half marathon. Or I could just put on a 10K and actually have a few runners show up.
