Won my age group in a 10k in San Diego 1993, got a package of prunes.
Took 3rd in my age group in a 10k in Maryland 1989, won a roll of duct tape.
I won the Little River "Suicide Hill Trail Run"...and first place was a plaque with a varnished cow pie on it...I also won a pair of jumper cables and a sheep skin while in Europe...
XC guy: I'm glad you brought up a race where winners get to pick what they wanted...I finished 2nd at a 5k in 1989 and I picked a gold-metal key chain with a thick, 2" flat running shoe. Shoe has die-stamped shoe outline and laces on one-side, nothing on other side. Local jeweler donated the prize and engraved the race date, my time, and my place for free. I still use the key chain today.
hey okie, when is that hit the bricks 5K? i've heard it's really fast and downhill.
Most unusual thing I ever got was a round, outdoor-type thermometer with a whitetail deer on the background/face. My brother has it on his back porch so he can look outside and see the temp before he goes to work in the mornings.
Coolest thing was 15+ years ago, before digital cameras/printers could instantly printout photos, the race took pix of each of the top three (I was third) as we crossed the finish line. I guess they quickly shipped it off ot a 1-hour type photo processing place, got them developed, them mounted them on a plaque, and covered it with a clear protective cover thing. Guess I'll always remember what a crappy race I ran that day !!
Also have a clear Lucite block with a 6.5 oz Coca Cola bottle suspended in the middle. Sits on a 2inch Hickory base that has the race name on it.
Jars of locally produced honey and blueberry jam and a mug by an area potter for three age group wins at a trail running festival.
Also a cow bell made out of Norwegian Army shell casings, but that was at a xc ski race.
Also a giant container of Heed, but because I hate the taste of that stuff, I traded it for an electric heat pad.
not many wierd things, i won boston marathon hat in a 10 miler one time, i traded it to the winner of the race for a 70$ watch. he wanted the hat for some reason and had too many watches. i won recently a \"gangster\" hat in a XC race, that was pretty dumb.
Artichokes a full Bag.Also some flowers once.
A Christmas dining plate (the race was in August).
I believe the awards at the Charleston Distance run used to be made out of coal.
I won a race for the women and was asked to wave at people in that days 4th of July parade..haha...I have also won a bobble head.
not me but a guy I run with won a big race (1400+ runners)and all he got was a lump of stone. He uses it to prop open a door. He still can't believe this was the 1st prize.
I won a mammogram. (I am a dude)
Free wings for a year at Wild Wings
At this long gone race in the late 70's I won a lobster. It was a 20k in Bourne MA, that attracted a who's who of top runners (someone here must remember it) You got to pick prizes from a table in order of finish. I won a $25 savings account one year there too! I think the Cape Cod Marathon still gives out a kitchen sink every year as a prize because the race director won a kitchen sink one year at the Bourne race.
Did a marathon in Quincy, MA probably a couple years later. They gave out a tiny piece of granite on a little Marble base.

My wife ran a half-marathon in October where she got $2500 for the win and a Pez dispenser in lieu of a finisher's medal. Personally, I thought that was great - a race that gives good $$$ for winning and a Pez dispenser for participation! Seems like a lot of races have that concept reversed.
What race was this?
a gift certificate to hooters and a pint of titos locally brewed vodka. Gotta love Austin!
I won an Andriondak or Muskoka chair. My buddy won a turkey in another race.
