Mo Greene or MJ:s names hasn´t been found in any doping documents. That´s a huge difference, MF!

The other marathoner directly affected by the drugged Cierpinski was the great Don Kardong. He deserved and earned the bronze only to be denied by the East Germans. Saw a documentary on some of their athletes a few years back. Many have died or have life long medical problems due to the injections.

The article was published in a French magazine (and not by an East German), and it's a sad indictment of the state of running in the US that most of the posters on this thread cannot help criticize Cierpinski and the communist system for their use of performance enhancing drugs.

Perhaps rather than taking the attitude "they beat us, therefore they must be on drugs", you should rather look at the positives of that system: systematic detection of promising athletes at school level, and a scientific approach to the sport.

Look at what modelling this approach has done for Australia (hint, hint).

Truth be told, if you ignore the alleged drug use which was more than likely imposed on him by the state's sports development programme, Cierpinski was a workhorse of a runner who led a simple and healthy lifestyle ; and you could certainly find worse role models.

I am far from being an apologist for drug use, but I also believe one should look at a person's character before passing a judgement on them. In that respect, I'll choose Cierpinski over Shorter anytime!

There is documentation that WC used PED's. That should be enough to take away the medal. Most of the "users" mentioned above never failed a test nor is there documentation that they used- only accusations.

There is no statute of limitations for murder or drug cheating....Cierpinski did not have epo (which is so potent and can improve a distance runner tremendously) but he still dabbled in drugs and cheated.

No user of PED at the top level does not also train his/her ass off as well.

I DISAGREE. The Kenyans are notoriously lazy and now with epo they can dog their distance training, inject they drugs, do lots of speed work and run a completing fraudulant 26:18 for ten k.

Ok, why is this even being debated?

Cierpinski's name is on a list of East German athletes who were given drugs.

Whether he used them knowingly or unknowingly, willingly or unwillingly, he cheated. If he honestly didn't know or truly didn't want to, then my heart goes out to the guy. Really, it would be awful to think you worked your butt off and won the Olympic Marathon only to find out your coaches were spiking your food or however they did it. If that's the case, I truly sympathize with WC. However, cheating is cheating.

I can't say anything for Cierpinski's character, so I won't. However, I would say that I am convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that he was on performance enhancing drugs.

On the other hand, if I got silver in the Olympic Marathon and was given proof the guy who won gold was on drugs, I would be pretty pissed off too, so I can't really condemn Shorter for his words. In fact, I think he was pretty dignified about the whole thing. It's not like he went on national tv or challenged Cierpinski to a fight or anything.

Actually, there seems to be a lot of Shorter hatred on these boards. I never met the guy, but in every video interview I've ever seen that featured him, he always seemed to be very polite and gracious.

Cierpinski, as witnessed by the several photos in the article (VO2MAX, France, October 2006), looks very healthy and is very healthy according to his doctors. He has not put on weight and still is very active, running twice a week and playing soccer twice a week at a competitive masters level. Soccer is combination aerobic and anaerobic.

If Cierpinski took drugs, then most likely he was an unwilling participant in a system (East Germany) where drugs were sometimes part of the equation. But if you read the article (and others about W.C.) with a discerning eye, you will quickly come to realize that he (W.C.) is a basically honest and hardworking runner, somewhat like his peer Karel Lismont. Not the fastest guy....but very intelligent when it comes to training and preparing for a marathon, with all the specificity involved.

In my book, before coming up with statements like "he should give his medal back'' a lot more than circumstantial evidence should be provided.

I suspect that this is largely myth--a myth we create, given all the movies and TV shows we've seen in which, in the end, virtue triumphs and vice receives it's "just" punishment. Unrotunately, real life isn't always like that.

Would the anabolic steroids he was given actually helped in training for Marathons?
