It's impressive that Josh doesn't get injured. He really puts in a lot of volume.

not that it matters... wrote:

Well, that's why you can't be a HS runner looking at his log and trying to emulate it. Josh has smartly built up to that kind of volume over the last 6-7 years; from being a 70mpw guy in the beginning of his HS career to reaching the 90-100 range by the end of his HS career.
Gradual progression that's paid dividends.
What would you suggest for a college freshman that wants to build up to over 100mpw safely?
I did max 45mpw as a HS senior.. and I am doing 65-70 now without major difficulty (in singles).
this guy is ridiculous
17 miles at 6 minute pace on a regular basis as a semi-recovery run leaves me in awe
Thing is his brother and the other guy do mnay of these runs with him, overtraining is all I have to say. I see the Jarvis guy's 5k pr is 14:49.
Upper body strength helps you maintain posture when you´re tired.
The same time that I'm impressed with his training just as Im impressed with ultramarathoners, one might wonder if 'Coach Jimmer' supports Josh's way of training. Which coach would recommend his athletes to run daily 17 miles runs?
Maybe that Josh thinks he is smarter than rest of the world class runners who runs 12-14 times a week and don't understand that singles are way better.
12-14 runs and multiple runs around threshold pace is a more optimal way of training. Because thats what sub 13 and sub 27 guys do every week. The fastest guy with singles is probably Ritz when he ran his 27.38.

Ok, prove it.

That's not a very good argument. I'm not saying that you're right or wrong, but that... that just wasn't supportive of your statement at all. That has nothing to do with why it's optimal.
I honestly think that he does singles because of his schedule. There are a number of successful college programs that only run singles, but when most of those guys graduate they switch to doubles as they become professional runners. Doubles take up ones time.

That's a very good argument. Taking results of singles runners versus doubles runners is about as good as you can get.
ttc, sub 13 and 27 are not results. i call bs.

We've seen articles giving samples of African training. They all involve 2 or even 3 times/day running. These are the groups producing the world's fastest times. It's a valid argument.

"The Circuit." A new word in our vocabulary, apparently an old one in Lannana's. Coach Jimmer says that this is one that they did a lot early season at Stanford. It goes something like this. An interval (today it was 600m on the IM fields ) followed by 30 seconds of pushups, immediately followed by another interval. This time followed by bicycles.
Yeah that sounds.... fantastic.... it'll really help them build... the ability to do pushups after running...
Actually one of the main points here is to keep the heart rate elevated during the "recovery" phase thereby turning 600m repeats into a semi tempo run without the stress on the legs. Additionally, it teaches change of pace and good form when tired. Don't knock it until you try it.
WHat are Josh McDougals prs on track?

It is a valid argument, but there is also an element of self selection that makes it hard to draw absolute conclusions. Historically, most of the best runners have run twice a day, but in the pre-professional era there were a LOT more guys getting good results on one run a day than there are now mostly because they often couldn't fit two runs in with their jobs. Now, if you've turned in the sorts of performances that show you can be a national or international caliber runner you can make a living from the sport and not have to fit your training in with a job, thus freeing you for two or more runs a day. So as time goes on, we'll likely see more and more "evidence" that two or three runs a day are optimal as the best in the country and world will be doing that.
Certainly, you'll be able to find people running faster than MacDougall who are running doubles most of the time. On the other hand, most US runners who are doing doubles are not running as fast as he does. Barry Magee always tells me the trick is to get in the volume in however many sessions you can.

You're acting like every good runner trains the same. You're lumping so many different people and different training styles into one category just to prove your point. There are many different good ways to train, the most important thing is to find what works well for YOU, not for someone else. Just because one person is good on 50-60 mpw, doesn't mean that the next guy won't need 120mpw. Basically, how do you know what's best for Josh McDougal?
As a friend of josh mcdougal and jordan, there is no reason why you should be asking to yourself who aren't they getting injured or that's to much volume or mileage. What ever they are doing is working for them and thats all that matters come race season. i do recall josh is a 13:50 5ker and jordan ran 14:01 at penn last spring. These guy's my know what they are doing and they are eating as healthiest as possible to stay injury free as well as jarvis jelen there teamate at liberty is! I have know the Mcdougals every since i started running and they are built to run, what professional marathons training is! and someday they are going to show and make a seen on the World in the marathon, as my close friends these gentlemen do nothing but train and train hard! so please stop asking why are they not injured or why so much mileage! everyone is different, the mcdougals where just built to run high mileage weeks. So that's all that needs to be sad. And for all you knocking on them. they are the most respectful distance runners i have ever met in my life and there family totally supports what they do! And that is what Us americanse need to realize that these gentlemen have dreams and they will run high mileage to be the BEST! and if you cannot respect that then you shall stop knocking and bashing on them. as for saying why did they go to liberty, leave it alone. they wanted to go there so they did the environment must fit there needs and education great and there christanity. So please stop asking dumb questions about these gentlemen. Also there parents are very respectful, I remeber the year i ran against both josh and jordan at the boilermaker jordan had a bad race and felt sick. but he stil had the courage to come up to me and say good job etc! as for his parents Great running family, I wish all american family's where like there's and mine because if so we would be beating every country there is in running if you all had has much gut's Pride and Determination as there fmaily and mine Do! No one's disrespecting the McDougals. Most of us are nearly in awe of their training (especially Josh's). But it's natural after learning someone's training to critique and suggest good alternatives. It's the "coaching" in us and it's healthy.
You sir, are illiterate. On a side note, I wonder what it's like to study biology at Liberty. Watching those bacteria evolve and become resistant to a particular medicine must really provide an interesting lab write-up.
