If the roster limits come from the AD, then the coach needs to fight for more reasonable limits, unless the football team has a roster limit of 12 and the basketball has a limit of 6.
And if the coach is setting the roster limits, the coach needs to find something else to do in the fall.
Get all 12 guys together, have a little fund raiser and save your team. Sell candy, have a raffle, etc.
Here's another thought. Start a running club at the school. Have fund raisers, do the local road races, make it open to all students interested, support the teams, run fast times, get hot chicks to join, have fun.
Don't forget that Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team.

.....don't mention it to the AD. that way he'll know he is doing the right thing limiting the numbers in the sport.
Parents have to get on the ball and get to the AD. If he/she made this a directive then he/she has to be educated or fired. If it was the coaches decidion, then he/she should be replaced. If you have 3 runners get injured your team is screwed.
My first XC race left me like 20-something placewise on the team. My first track race had me over 11:00 for 2-miles (guy here).
I ended up running D1. Those high school cuts are just wrong.
My life sucks even worse now. Without my knowing, my mom called the principal to ask what is going on and to complain. The Principal (is also Director of Athletics) explains and explains and finally tells my mom that although he will look into it that the coaches decisions are final and that this year all runners must travel in the school van for insurance reasons and there is only room for 8, the coach, and a driver. And word is out at school that my "mommy" called because I could'nt make the team. Guys on the team are calling me Son of Pre-menstrual. I tried to go for a run yesterday to clear my mind but it just makes me madder. I suck.
well at least if you get on the team they can yell to you "GO PRE!"

... Now this is just getting funny. Try another sport, like band or bowling or something else. You might have more fun with it if you're getting so bent out of shape over this. Like everyone else on the board as been saying just train on your own or do something else.
High school sucks, life doesn't end there. I don't think anyone should be cut from cross country, nevertheless, it happened. I liked the idea above in this thread of starting a running club. There are plenty of road races to take part in. Run the races, work on your fitness level, form, and race strategy.
Some guys on my college team had a limited high school running experience and improved greatly.
I'd hang in there. Everyone lacks confidence and is too worried about what others think in high school. Looking back on high school I wish I would've kicked a few people's a$$es and flipped off even more back then. Lots of stupid rich kid punks.
For those who had a great high school expeirence, more power to you; there are many others like me who didn't -- X-C was the best experience for me as a prep, however.
What year are you? Just keep training, run some road races on your own, and come back next season. It sucks, but you have a long runnig career ahead of you. Use this time to build a solid base, and take the furstration you feel as motivation to train hard. Then, when you come back next time, there will be no way they can cut you.
this is why us as americans suck at distance running.

As others have said, running doesn't suck, your coach does.
I have never heard of anyone cutting a team down to only 8 runners. Maybe he really doesn't care about the team and that makes it easy for him.
We always had at least 2 full teams, a JV and Varsity. And based on how you ran you could bounce betweeen the two.
This is short sighted and a poor poor poor way to run a team.
If there's another high school in the area, I'd transfer. Most high schools are the same. They all claim one has more pride than another, bunch of B.S.
Find another school, sounds like the guys on the X-C team are a bunch of jerks anyway. Most high schools suck, find another one with better teammates, better coaches, and better attitudes.
What is the name of your school and what state is it located ???.
The principle should have had the common decency not to divulge that your Mom called.

I haven't read the thread, just the first post. I hope I'm not the first to say that your school's policy is completely braindead and was obviously designed by someone who has no idea about how to build a good high school cross country program.
It's a shame that an experience like this can turn you off of what should be the best and most accessible sport your school or your life can offer.
