My school was always dead silent. Huddled, captains would say a few words about the course, the day, the goals, and we would race. We let our feet do the talking. We always laughed at the schools that had loud chants.
The best was when we were at an invitational where the starter was announcing each team one at a time. As he did, the teams would cheer. He got to us, stone silence. We hadn't even planned it or said anything, everyone was just mentally on the same page. He looked confused, and repeated our name again. More silence, then he moved one. We won the meet.
