Sorry I'm really dumb. As I said, I've watched the thing 30 times as I've said but I never watched it past the finish line. I didn't even realize that they showed the slo-mo replay.
Yes that makes it pretty obvious that it was El G's fault. Morceli's foot DID go way way out, but that was clearly as a result of El G hitting it, not of Cacho or some deliberate thing.

I don't think you can say it was "clearly as a result of El G hitting it." From the video, you can't tell what caused Morceli to clip his calf. Was it his own fault in that he brought his foot too far inside, or did his foot get hit? The video does not make it clear. I thought someone said there is NBC video that does make it clear.

That's just it, you really can see it but you have to watch the side view slow motion replay that they show AFTER the race has finished.
El G's foot clearly hits Morceli's from behind. This causes Morceli to fall a bit and he sticks out his leg (already knocked out there by El G) a little more to steady him
If you put Windows Media Player on slow mo as well you get a very slow very clear view of it.

Understood, but what causes Morcelli to clip his calf prior to that, which leads to his right foot moving out and El G hitting it? That's the million dollar question.

I can't get the footage to come up again but when I watched it earlier I thought the slo-mo portion after the race didn't start until Morcelli's leg was on the way down towards clipping his calf. As it starts you see Morcelli hit his left calf with his right foot causing his right foot to shoot out in front of El G who then steps on Morcelli and falls. The replay starts at a point where Morcelli is already on his way towards clipping his own calf so you don't know if someone else caused that or if he did it on his own.
i think it's clear that morceli, knowing el g was going to tag him, decided while running about 54-second pace to stick his foot back and trip el g. i mean, it's so obvious. it was a blatant foul and morceli should have been disqualified. i mean, he practically took out a gun and shot el g.

This is correct. It wasn't El G who put the train in motion. It was either Cacho from behind or Morceli tripping himself. We'll never know.
The other fun thing is to count the number of times that Cacho turns his head to look back on the last lap. I think I got seventeen.

I downloaded it from the site so now I've watched that part over and over. It's a side view
They're in their normal stride and El G is moving up on Morceli. He moves up so close that he hits Morceli's foot as it is moving backwards causing the entire sequence of events. It's pretty clear that El G had only himself to blame.
If only I had watched the entire video all the way though I would have seen this right away and not wasted space with this thread.

Sorry, I've had the tape since '96 and there is no way to see that from the side view (or any view). There is no magic loogie to decide this one.

I had to watch it about a dozen times, but this is the only explanation.
The front view shows definitively that Morceli did not clip his own calf.
The side view suggests that El G's spike just barely scraped the bottom of Morceli's spike, causing Morceli's leg to stick out, causing El G to step on top of Morceli's spike (on the next stride), causing El G to fall.

In 1996 though Morceli was considered the best 1500 man ever (by many) and wanted this win desperately after his own disappointment in Barcelona and El G wasn't yet the legend he is now.
Excellent point; El G wasn't anywhere near the runner he would become. The fall was unfortunate but I don;t think he would have won had he not fallen.

Exactley; maybe the fall inspired him to get the 1500 and the 5000 in the same games which is arguably much harder than back to back 1500 golds. When you consider the fields it was truly an amazing feat.

Yeah that's right! He did the same thing in Barcelona too. Still, after El G and Morceli, Cacho's the best 1500 guy of the 1990s - Oly gold, Oly silver, 3:28 european record, silvers at the WCs in 93 and 97 and a 4th in 99. That's a terrific record.
