yes...bad memory for me.....I should have been there in '74 and ducked under 4 along with Palmer and Schmel, etc., but was injured after running a 404 in April and done for season after limping thru conference in early May. Never made it to Wichita in '74. In '73 I was 'there' but hardly a threat...all the guys u mentioned were there in '73, too. Damn those injuries!!!

no...I'm a nobody....I never improved on that 404 due to injuries....btw, I was a friend of Charlie McMullen's. He lived with me for awhile in the late 70s when he moved to California. Unfortunately, he died of cancer a few years ago. Very sad.

Long-time Rochester running standout and city-school district teacher Charlie McMullen passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Monday August 4, 2003 at age 52. Predeceased by his father, Charles MacMullen. Survived by his wife, Nancy; mother, Eula; brothers, Timothy (Marilyn), Jack (Joann), William and Robert (Barbara); sister, Deborah (John) Rath; mother and father-in-law, Jack and Ruthann Stubbs; brother-inlaw, John (Cheryl) Stubbs; sister-in-law, Joanne (Chris) Williams; and several nieces and nephews. He was a Special Education Teacher with The Rochester City School District and Volunteered with Monroe Co. Special Olympics Program. He was a successful runner associated with Rochester Track Club and the Genesee Valley Harriers and an avid fisherman.....(he was a many time sub 4 minute miler and 215 marathoner. An NCAA All American and Big 8 champion. A fierce competitor on the Midwest Relay circut).
Contributions may be made to the Lipson Cancer and Blood Center at Rochester General Hospital or Monroe Co. Special Olympics in his memory.

not sure....I was only made aware of letsrun.com less than a year ago, as I am not around runners anymore in my non-running life, as a 50 plus year old. Is the T & F News site, similar?
yeahh, me too.....in my non-running life now as a 49 year old, I am not around runners anymore; though I still follow the sport in print and tv....I wasn't aware of these internet 'running sites' either until about 6 months ago. A great place to waste time, (lol), reminiscing over great events, races and training done decades ago. A chance to help the young guys with advice on injuries and training, from a perspective of 'been there, tried that'....man, can u imagine if we would have had this resource back in the 70's or 80's and been able to go online to letsrun.com and found out within an hour about the strange, sharp pain in your arches that has seemingly come out of nowhere and what your options for treatment were? (plantar fasciitis).....amazing tool.....
damn...I'm really sorry to hear about Charlie McMullen. He was a cool guy with long, curly hair who competed like a madman. He was well liked on campus among lots of people besides the distance group. From the obit., it appears that he really 'got his life together' and was doing good things for others at the time of his death. (as opposed to being a fun-loving-beer drinking free spirit in his 20s). What a loss. RIP Charlie.

Am I mistaken, or didn't Wohlhuter beat Jim Ryun out for a spot on the 1972 Munich Oly team in the 800? How come that hasn't been mentioned? Also, wasn't he ranked #1 in the mile (not the 1500) in 1974? Didn't he beat both Kiwis Dixon & Walker in Stockholm that year with a 3:54? I believe he stepped up to the mile in 1974 with immediate success. Rick Wohlhuter attended Notre Dame. I agree that his 1500/mile performances are somewhat overlooked. But he was never ranked #1 in the world by T&F News in that event. He was ranked 5th, 7th, and 8th (in 1974, 1975, and 1976). But he was ranked #1 in the US in 1974 and 1976. And #2 in 1975.
I didn't know that he beat Walker and Dixon in the mile in 1974.
Rick was not the last American man to win an Olympic medal at 800 or above. Last one was Johnny Grey in 1992.
Having said that I had the priveledge/pleasure to witness the '76 in person. It was a fantastic race. Only person missing was Mike Boit.
Prancing is not the word I would choose to describe his running, but his feet did not spend much time on the ground. Ken Sparks did a photo analysis of Rick running a four minute mile on a treadmill that confirmed his air time vs. contact time was off the charts!
I also was in Wichita '73, '74, and more. What a great meet.
Most efficient white runner ever, would have been the first sub 13min guy on real distance training.
Earlier post about a couple of KSU guys being pulled along to sub-4s and a followup post referred to Schmel. It was Jeff Schemmel of Kansas State U, now the Athletic Director at San Diego State.
right...and his sub 4 teammate, Keith Palmer, is a veterinarian, in Kansas City, last I heard. Neither ran, post college, as far as I know. Jeff went to law school at Washburn and Keith to vet school at KSU.

You may be right. I did read in an old Track Technique article that Rick would do 3 x 600m in about 1:17-1:21 with a 15 minute recovery between reps. Seems similar!
