Am I crazy to think that 3:34/1:49 isn’t that impressive for a 5k runner? what’s this speed everyone is talking about?
the 1:49 is relatively meaningless, it was just extra speed work. the 3:34 is pretty solid. it means he's got enough of a gear to generally close with the top 5k guys, he's not the pure 10k/XC guy he's made out to be. that being said, you've gotta be a sub-3:30 guy to be truly relevant at worlds in the 5k. still, 3:34 in May is quality, especially for someone viewed as lacking speed. regardless, just a big fan of this guy and that he seems to have fun with it all.

He is absolutely a stud 5/10 guy and 12:48 is an awesome time. A 3:34 does not make him 1500/5000m. His 5000m time equates to 3:29.4 and his 26:57, which is soft, comes to 3:31. Has he shown that he has a “gear” in the 5000m?

Moh Ahmed has similar PBs and two medals. It is doable.
Maybe not the gold. Looking at the 5k over the last 20 years you either had a fast 3:28 1500m runner or the literal WR holder, with Edris being the odd exception.

Similar pbs means jack bc I've never seen Graham close a race like Moh. Your kick matters for medals, ask Grant about the 10k, & all the guys Hocker smoked in the 5k, at WCs last Sept.
I saw this thread title this morning, copied the link and texted it to coach Gibby (without reading it) and gave him call.
He picked up and said, "American record? Don't insult us. We are going go the world record and sub 12:30 in Oslo."
Just kidding. He didn't say that.
He said Graham is doing well and ahead of where he was last year at this point in the year. Plan is to hit Europe hard I think for 3 races and then go back to altitude for a while (did he say 7 weeks or maybe he was just there for 7 weeks?) before going back to Europe at the end of the season.
Graham looks leaner and meaner than in previous years. He's still, unfortunately, training on his own, but getting a month of altitude training in Flagstaff, given how well he responded to altitude training during his year off during COVID, between hs and Harvard, is a very promising sign, as was his 1500/800 double and the above workout. That wind forecast in Oslo does not look promising but I hope that one of these two 5000s (Oslo, Paris) is a fast one. He is surely in pr shape right now.
How many other world class distance runners are training on their own??? I bet not many...is this really his best move??

“Training alone” might mean he has his own plan and set up but still does most of his runs/workouts with other people
