ya theres only been a couple people who have ran 13:14 back to back... don't exaggerate like it happens all the time. plus, bernard lagat wasn't exactly raised on apple pie if you know what i mean.

Oops, I thought I had heard that Roger Bannister grew up rather wealthy. I stand corrected.
How about wejo and rojo? They've never had to sweat anything. I don't see the connection between family wealth and running well. Motivation plus talent plus obvercoming injuries means everything. Did wejo give it his best? Only he knows.
I would say that what is real adversity for a wealthy white kid is normal everyday life to a kid forced to grow up in the ghetto.
I'm pretty sure Bernard Lagat is an elite distance runner no matter how you look at it. Maybe you should look up his credentials if you disagree. Not to mention, that 13:14 was a championship race, a race that should be judged merely by the order of finish, not by time.
rich kids can run well in the US, but only the poor kids in africa can run a 13:14 and say "thats just the first half."[/quote]
Yes a rich kid from the USA COULD HAVE, IN THE PAST, that is, become a world record holder in the distance events. It was all about desire, talent and training (good coaching). Unfortuneately, nowadays that is all superceded by DRUGS. The reason the poor kid from Africa can run that 26:28 10k is epo, or whatever (repoxygen?) they are on to now.... you see, a lot of liberals like the poster whose quote i left partially intact above, believe, or want to believe that there is magic in black skin, or being poor and hungry or in being from some distant continant, or from some magical valley. All rubbish! Frank Shorter had tremendous talent, incredible desire, and a world of knowledge about the marathon event, The only reason Frank Shorter did not run as fast as today's record holders is because Frank did not, and would not, use drugs like epo.....Barry Bonds has decimated baseball due to drugs...Geb, el g. and Lagat have decimated track with drugs but some here are too stupid to realize it.
Compared to runners from other parts of the world, all Americans might well be considered "rich".

Are you not adding to my point? Didn't they quit when it became time to work hard?
No I'm not adding to your point. How do you know they "quit"....?
You may be one of the few folks who knows why Sir Roger is Sir Roger. It isn't just because he ran the first sub 4 mile. I had the chance to meet him when I participated in a conference at Cambridge in 1990. He was more interested in talking about research than running. He was a medical student when he broke the 4 minute barrier. I have wondered how fast he would run today with modern shoes, track surfaces and training methodology.
"The man who can drive himself further once the effort gets painful is the man who will win." - Sir Roger Bannister
adversity during youth does not equate to a successful nor sane grown-up life....
I think there are more poor kids then rich kids, and hence simple logic would suggest that a poor kid would be more likely to have talent than a rich kid, and therefore would be more likely to succeed.
In the US, if poor equates to fast running times, then HS and NCAA XC would not comprise of 90% white suburbanites.
Poor kids sprint and ride the bus. No need to run long distance.
Bronx - I find myself coming ever more closely to your view with each passing year. So much so that I think you are right on the money.

Why do you think that only African runners use epo? Are you saying that no American runners use drugs, but all African runners do?
Wasn't Meredith Rainey a rich and privileged kid? I seem to remember an article in RW several years ago in which she portrayed herself as a victim because she was black and female - despite the fact that she was the offspring of two professionals, Harvard educated, physically and intellectually gifted, and spending her summers running races in Europe.
dude, your argument is bogus. whether or not athletes "in the past" were using drugs does not make a difference. people have been finding illegal methods of gaining an advantage over their competition since the dawn of time.

Life should be so rough.
rich kids can have their own races and rabbits set up for them so yes they can be good. and if they lose they'll just cry for a rematch like korea.

stop bitching unless you've walked around with a black skin.
racism is strange. like being a white girl traveling in india where every man expect you to be slutty and loose!
i think for american it should be can rich kid sprint!

blah, blah, blah ... all freaking rubbish. you have not given a shred of evidence that FRANK SHORTER did not take drugs or done anything illegal since he certainly had beaten lots of east german druggies. why should i believe you more than geb, lagat etc. ? SHOW me the evidence that he is COMPLETELY clean, or shut the f*** up, or go help our sport burst those druggies.
all i can conclude is that you're a freaking sore loser from USA!
