If it makes you feel better know that a mountain lion would absolutely not be rustling in the bushes. That’s prey behavior as they flee. Rabbits. Squirrels etc.
A mountain line would be absolutely still. You would likely have zero idea it was even there until it was about to grab you.

Most everybody has something. Some of its real, most of its not. Some doctors will tell a patient anything they want to hear. Time to toughen up..............

It could be worse: every big stone ahead is a wolf, and every wet tree trunk is a bear--that's schizophrenia. Fortunately the city cross country course painted every stone white, for visibility.
I used to run in a wilderness area that had become infamous due to mountain lion attacks. It came out in the national news, and everything. A runner acquaintance told me that on the day of an attack, he had been running through the trails a few hours before a mountain biker was killed. He told me that the area was very quiet. Too quiet. No birds. No squirrels running around. No deer. He said it was very creepy. He was not surprised when he later learned about the attack in the news.
Ever since then, when things got too quiet on the trail, I turned around and hauled ass back to civilization, while occasionally looking over my shoulder. So if you hear "rustling in the bushes" that's actually a good thing. It's probably a deer, bobcat, or coyote running away from you. You wouldn't even know until it is too late that a mountain lion is stalking you.

Personally, I've found that these are an absolute game changer, giving me motivation, and I don't have the least bit of hesitancy about anything at all.
I just get fired up in all the right ways.
It gets me past those internal voices and fuses me with something more inspiring.
FWIW, now I run with my new dog and I don't think the earbuds are a good idea with her safety in mind.
