If they only do just over two thirds of a thin then give them two thirds of a finisher tshirt with DNF written on it. If you want to impress a girl it is better to show up to the bar with a 26 point MF 2 tshirt. Then you will get more respect and people will know that you are not someone to be fukked with.

Hey, I actually did this once. The marathon course came within half a mile of where my car was parked at about the 17 mile mark. I wasn't injured and it wasn't too hot, but I was just having a very bad day and it was clear that I couldn't come remotely close to my time goal. So I just stepped off the course, walked to my car and drove home. I didn't expect to get a finisher's medal, though!
With finishing temperatures 75+ degrees, this is absolutely the right thing to do I won't be surprised if the whole thing becomes a 30k past 10:20 or so. Going to be a brutal day out there.
The Los Angeles Marathon has quietly introduced a new policy for its March 8 race: runners who head to the finish at mile 18 due to the heat will still
Nothing like this really surprises me anymore, including this. It's the age of participation over achievement. If there's anything that surprises me, my "local" marathon, Twin Cities, still only hands out their t-shirts to finishers. I can only imagine the messages/emails they get from people complaining about not getting a shirt for signing up, only finishing.
It's fine. The medals are paid for. What are they going to do with them? And this encourages people to stay out of the hospital. They'll be pulled from the marathon results. And how does it hurt you, anyway?
exactly. Did this in Philadelphia once when my hamstring acted up. Quick right turn instead of straight, and I'd "finished" the half marathon, at marathon pace. Made sense for me that day, but still a DNF.
One year that I ran Boston when it was warm (2012? 2014?), they said the day before roughly "we're going ahead with it, but if you want to defer to next year you can, guaranteed entry". Seems to me in the same spirit to say it's going to be hot out there, you might want to call it early, and here's one good place on the course to do so.
The only oddity of it is the business about finisher medal and such if you didn't finish the race.
The Los Angeles Marathon posted this on their official website:
Having a Tough Day? If you're having a tough day and want to end your race before 26.2, you can choose to take the turn at Mile 18 and head into the finish line early. You do not need to notify anyone of your decision and can opt to take this route at any time. This option is available for this year only. How to find it: Just past Mile 18 on Santa Monica Blvd, look for the Charity Half Finish signage on the left side of the road. Signs, cones, and barricades will be in place to help direct you to this exit and toward the finish line. You will still receive your finisher medal and any challenge medal you’ve earned, and your official race results will be updated at a later date to reflect your time and mileage. There is no shame in making a smart decision for your body.
Good God. Muh california, Soft on crime and now Soft on finishing the Marathon. Shame.
And you are not exactly mentally tough. So check yourself.
Sure I am. As for running complaining about 75 being a "brutal" day is laughable, to me anyway. I run Marathons and Ultras, the Ultras in the summer get near 100 yet we persevere. 18 miles and finish? Soft AF. Not shocking for los angeles where Fantasyland policies make things worse. How many tent cities does one pass during the la Marathon? Gross. 100+ Marathons/Ultras. ZERO DNFs

You run 100 miles in 100 degrees? You cannot do this. Please do better in terms of truth telling. Why don’t you do the shorter distances? People generally only run that far when then cannot run well in the shorter distances.
