Fair or foul is a bit too broad. People are allowed to have suspicions and to report them to the authorities. It's then up to the authorities to conduct a proper investigation. The local police seem to have responded by escalating the situation to the point where both the FBI and the National Guard became involved.
a maintenance worker spotted the lab in the garage and notified to the landlord. The landlord, who absolutely could have investigated the lab, appears not to have done so. Things escalated rapidly from there.
The lab was in the garage (ahem, not the basement) and there is video evidence of exactly what was going on.
So, I'm going to go with massive overreaction based on people assuming the worst without simply looking at the available evidence, or apparently even talking to the kid.
He and his family have been removed from the residence and he has had to hire an attorney, which can be (usually is) expensive. He hasn't been charged with a crime and yet these are the consequences as they stand.
On September 14, 2015, 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed was arrested at MacArthur High School in Irving, Texas, for bringing a disassembled digital clock to school. The incident ignited allegations of racial profiling and Islamophob...
I read each story. It's a "see something, say something" world now, especially with the likely bioterrorist labs being recently discovered in CA, but this kid is just a savant doing what savants do.
This kid appears to be a less autistic version of Sheldon Cooper. He skipped high school and is about to graduate from college at age 17! His obsession appears to be researching cubanes, an oddly structured hydrocarbon with potential to increase bioavailability of chemotherapy drug delivery to tumors... and some other medical delivery benefits that are too technical to explain on LetsRun. That's because his aunt died 6 years ago (at his age 11... an impressionable age) from cancer. If the kid was doing something nefarious, his attorney would have NEVER let him do a live interview with a reporter.
Many posters here might be surprised to learn that chemotherapy actually kills a lot of cancer patients because the chemo drugs kill more than cancer cells. Many chemotherapy drugs kill adjacent healthy cells and bone marrow as well, which weakens the immune system to the point that the patiens immune system can't fight common illnesses. Now, whether this young man is going down a dead-end road or not with cubanes is unknown, but I wish him luck in his future research.
Hopefully, this article will catch the attention of one of the major AI research centers in the US, Hong Kong, or the Middle East and they will offer this kid an apprenticeship.

Your thread title is just as absurd and irresponsible as the published article. The FBI should be embarrassed for wasting their time.
1) The kid isn't trying to cure cancer. He had a home chemistry lab, typically purchased by 6th graders. He was doing youtube chemistry demonstrations. Straightforward.
2) His nosy landlord sees a chemistry lab and assumes the worst -- a diabolical plot to destroy the Earth. Calls the police, who understandably would not understand what it was. They hand it over to the FBI, who should've recognized what a 6th chemistry lab looked like. This is the embarrassing part.
3) His lawyer was "quoted" that the kid was going to cure cancer one day. No one ever claimed he was curing cancer in his home lab. His lawyer said that. This is as much the same credibility as Rojo's mom claiming that Rojo is training for the Olympics. It's absurd.
Have no idea what was in the lab, since no info was released by the authorities. If it was enough for 5 days of FBI, I'm betting it was a little more than a few test tubes.

OK after looking at his video he's doing a bit more than junior high science experiments, but the point remains the same. The FBI should have wrapped this up in a few hours.

Then again, the Chinese are building massive housing projects without the tenants to fill them.
How is that bad? The population is increasing massively year by year so the buildings will be filled with tenets in zero time
WTF? Where have you been. First of all, population in China has not been increasing. Secondly, it's well known that they're been building ghost cities without tenants to fill them for at least two decades.

Did you do law enforcement before
Feels like you did law enforcement like a senior military officer or a police officer

What if the kid is cooking meth or accidentally blows up the neighborhood?
And I doubt a 17 year old would know anything about how to find a cure for cancer. There are tons of smart people in various university programs as well as private companies trying to find cures and treatments, if they haven't found it I doubt a 17 year old in their garage is going to solve it.

Brown skinned and highly intelligent child with scary sounding name racially profiled and hassled by wealthy whites in Orange County, CA.
He'll be fine, eventually. By 2040, he will win a Nobel Prize for Chemistry or Medicine for his cancer curing discoveries at a China or Gulf State based pharma concern.
