Shout out if you remember racing in the National Guard Armory in Buffalo (circa 1970-75). Hacking fumes and soot from your lungs for the next 3 days. Ahh the good old days. Go Sabres!
I can't say I've ever heard of this - the one on Connecticut, the one on Best, or another one? Any other details you can recall? If you're willing to share I'd appreciate it.
I remember hearing stories about people running laps in the concourse at the Memorial Aud, but that wasn't for racing.
Buffalo, NY - arguably one of the wintriest cities in the US - is finally getting a real indoor track (open in 2027... presumably late 2027). Not the 150m multipurpose surface track at Lancaster HS, not the 160m track at Buffalo State, not the 200m hardwood track at UB Alumni arena... a real indoor track: 200m and banked per the article. And it's being built by a group that isn't affiliated with a school, interestingly enough. About gd time!
if it's what I remember, it wasn't even 200m, didn't have fully rounded turns, and was only distinguished from the rest of the floor by tape...basically just a part of the basketball floor that they decided to pretend was a "track"
we also used to do laps on the awkward, carpeted platforms raised above it...
I'm not defending the hardwood track at UB - it's a sad excuse for an indoor track - but it is a real track in the sense that it has (permanent) lanes and it's 200m. It is indeed just the same hardwood as the basketball court. Way back when there used to be a relay meet (Legend Group Relays) on that track at UB and it was well attended b/c there were so few other indoor facilities. I'm not aware of a race being held there since the early 2000s, and I don't think anyone uses it even for practice. It's only visible / usable when the bleachers are fully retracted.
People who get this new facility will never know what it meant to survive training and running in a Buffalo with 0 real facilities.
It amazes me that the Rochester, NY area has (unbanked, 200m) indoor tracks at Brockport, R.I.T., and Nazareth while Buffalo has none within an hour.
I’ve heard rumors since around 2023 a 300m flat track could possibly come to the Rochester area. Can’t say specifically where but it would definitely add to an unnecessarily high concentration of tracks for such a small city
meanwhile Monroe County Track League is cutting distance events from hs meets due to time constraints. Nice.

What does Rochester have to do with Buffalo ? It's 1:15 minutes away.
