Is Marco Langdon the modern day Pre?

The closest thing to Pre we have seen yet is Ethan Gregg.

I must admit, I would be unable to watch some of those earlier post race interviews. He acted like a teenager. People do however mature and change upon reflection. His interaction with Gelindo Bordin seemed to have had a beneficial effect. He spoke candidly about just wanting to be in a position to help his family, train hard and race like a warrior. Time will tell if a leopard and his spots are entwined.

Not so sure about Pre, but perhaps a modern-day Hugh Hefner...

The trash talk was entertaining early, but without wins it starts to sound hollow. Loud doesn’t equal elite. He’s getting hard to listen to at this point.

But he rarely if ever really trash talks, that would be berating opponents, which he does NOT do. He speaks of himself, for sure, and I think even that is a bit much, for what he has actually done. I have followed his career since HS, and I never saw him being this good, ever..really good? Yes, for sure..3:33 7:34 13:05 good? ehh, even as a fan, I never saw all this coming.

But, he is, and based on clicks etc. he is kind of entertaining lol. Like he probably did, I thought he would run 7:30 , he did not. So be it. 7:34.x is #4 College all time .

He needs to grow up. The F-bombs aren’t edgy, they’re juvenile. Right now he comes off like an oversized baby yelling for attention. He keeps declaring he’s “the best,” but the results say otherwise. You don’t crown yourself elite, you earn it. I want to like the guy, but until someone teaches him to run first and talk later, it’s just noise with no substance.

The comparison to Steve Prefontaine is laughable. Pre talked, but he backed it up. He raced constantly, took risks, beat elite fields, and actually changed the sport. His confidence came from results and fearlessness, not microphones and quotes.
Pre didn’t keep saying he was the best, he proved it by lining up and emptying the tank every time. This guy keeps declaring greatness without earning it. That’s the difference. One was authentic fire. The other is just noise.

he was third at outdoor 5k losing to two non Americans I believe

all this said? If he cared what I thought? I would absolutely tell him to dial it down a few notches

What do I know?

Being a Pre fan means understanding what actually mattered. Steve Prefontaine didn’t earn credibility by winning every race, he earned it by who he raced and who he beat. He lined up against Olympic champions and world medalists (Ryun, Wottle, Gammoudi, Stewart, Shorter) and beat them head-to-head.
And the idea that the sport is “deeper now” doesn’t really hold. It was deep then too fewer races, fewer opportunities, no pacing lights, no super shoes, no global circuit designed to chase times. You had to race, often against the same killers, over and over.
Running 3:33, 7:34, and 13:05 is fast. But constantly declaring yourself “the best” without wins or hardware isn’t a depth issue, it’s a self-awareness issue.
Pre talked big after proving he belonged by racing anyone, anywhere. That’s the difference. One earned his voice. The other is letting the talk run ahead of the resume!

I am completely aware of his whole career

and have NEVER heard him ever say he was the best at any distance

Say he is striving to be the best is way different than declaring himself that

He’s more of an edge lord Cooper Teare. Great runner, but is poised for a lot of 4-5th place finishes.
