Mary Cain claims in her new book she also was bullied by HS teammates and parents and the coach didn’t do anyting about it

Bullying can totally be covert and subtle. It can mean shunning and exclusion. Not really sure how much a coach can force people to hang out with each other. It probably stemmed from jealousy, could have stemmed from a dislike of something about Mary herself, but it could just be petty for pettys sake. Do you not have any experience dealing with catty HS girls...?

I'm not saying her retelling is definitely accurate, but you're going to trash someone's written account of events without having access to the actual account? Come on, this thread should be starting when the book itself is released. Do better haha (jk this is Let'sRun)

Cain begged Salazar to return to the team. When he denied her, she claimed that he was a bully. She will be a lifelong rich crybaby. Anyone who hires her is destined to be fired over sexual harassment and bullying and discrimination.

The most pathetic fact is she’s attending medical school, taking a spot from someone who would actually contribute to society. She’ll always be a bitter spoiled brat demanding reparations from the world for her perceived injustice.

There is no proof she was bullied. Even if she was, welcome tk high school! Most people get bullied to some degree. She's 30 years old, time to let go of high school and move on just like everyone else has to. Her career didnt work out as expected....again, happens to a lot of people. Crying about the past will get you nowhere. Find something you enjoy doing and/or are good at. But move on from high school and stop complaining about everything that happened in the past. Compared to most, shes had a very easy and pampered life.

Cain is 100% lying here. I was college teammates with a girl who ran on the same team as Cain. She said Cain was really mean and nasty to everyone. She wanted all of the coaches attention and would get mad if the coach talked to anyone else on the team. Overall Cain was just a bad teammate.

I believe this person because if Cain was a great teammate, it would be so cool to brag to everyone about being her teammates because she was the most famous person in American running for a while.

I know a ton of people who bragged about being teammates with Sydney McLaughlin. But nobody ever went out of their way to brag about being teammates with Cain because Cain was a horrible person.

I have 3 close friends who grew up and attended Bronxville HS. 1 who randomly doesn't know the other 2 so I've spent a lot of time in Bronxville and with different groups of affiliated people. It gets way way worse in the NYC area. It's one of the nicer zip codes but people live there for the public schools (i.e. they're opting out of private) and I don't consider it one of the snobbier NYC demographics.

She's a professional victim. For girl that was born with a lot of privileges and advantages, she sure seems to have invented a life of struggles for herself.

When someone wants to be miserable, there's really nothing you can do to stop them. I think she would do herself a big favor by just moving on with her life. She's like so many child actors, or other flash in the pan athletes. They just cant get past it.

Given the dynamics of adolescent social circles, it wouldn't surprise me if Mary Cain is telling the truth. I hope Cooper Lutkenhaus isn't going through anything like this.

I believe the bully stuff. there’s a ton of twisted stories out there of disgusting locker room bullying. easy to see a for a particular year a clique of a few bad apples on a catty girls team in ultra snot Bronxville. Very nice town & deli though.

She was always a headcase

Dude, she got her career and young adulthood railroaded by a corporate coach. She saw what could have been. Sure she made the decision to go that route, I would have too with that talent. But it was a bitter disaster for her- some bad luck and probably a lot of bad coach.

it was sad to see her career not follow its trajectory.

So glad to see she graduated med school and is a doctor now. Shows she always going to still win.

And besides writer says we can make a few hundred grand telling this honest and interesting story, where do I sign.

I mean high school girls are all pretty harsh to each other. I remember our girls soccer team literally not speaking to each other for a full season.

But the bigger thing here is she was not ready to go to Portland and train with Alberto. She was 18 went across the country to the most bad ass, crazy, veteran, intense group in North America. She wasn’t ready, it’s on her, her parents, and her agent to step in and find something different.

Shannon Rowberry, Galen Rupp, Mosier, etc don’t have time to help you out!!! That group chewed up and spit out a seasoned 24-25 year old Cam Levens!

Hold on, though. Maybe she is a perk! BUT....that wouldn't necessarily disqualify everyone else for being jerks, too. Just drive around and notice how everyone else is driving; is it really that hard to believe that Maybe just we're all jerks everywhere?

The whole "bullying is just the way it is" series of responses is a prime example. Look, nobody likes a whiner. But....the world would be a lot better if we all TRIED to stop being a dick. Just try. We can debate where the lines really are, but theoretically we should all agree that bullying sucks and it shouldn't really happen.

For example, maybe writing a book and calling out the "bullying" is BULLYING itself. There's probably a debate and discussion available there. But the value and concept of whistle blowing is also worth while. At least in a vacuum. This is where nuance comes in, something that that seems to be in short supply these days.

When she decided to go pro and was negotiating shoe deals her parents were involved, obviously, and were interested in nothing other than getting the biggest dollar amount they could. Nothing else mattered. I know this because I have a friend who worked for another shoe company and was negotiating with them. One of my sons knew a few of her high school teammates and there was no love lost between them and her. Maybe that manifested itself as bullying. I'll be interested to see if there's any counterpoint coming out.
