To put Kuroda's run in perspective, he started the leg at almost exactly the same time as Shoya Saito of Josai University. Kuroda's 10,000m PR is 27:37. Saito's is 27:45. But Kuroda ran the leg a full 2 minutes and 12 seconds faster than Saito.
Japanese TV broadcasted a fascinating post-race show that showed the reactions of the coaches as they followed their athletes in their team vans. Just as Kuroda was about to run down the Waseda University runner who was leading the race, Kuroda ran past the Waseda van and raised a fist in triumph at the Waseda coach, who could only chuckle.
Asked later why he did that, Kuroda said he was so deep in concentration that he didn't remember much about the latter part of the race but that he had probably just been caught up in the moment.
