He owns enough shares in different companies that if he instantaneously sold all of them at their current spot price he would theoretically receive 726 billion dollars. Of course, if he tried to actually sell that much the share value would drop immediately because there wouldn't be enough demand to sustain their current value.
This is one of the reasons Musk has recently pushed so hard for huge cash payouts from his companies. Despite all his stock value, he doesn't have anywhere near that much cash on hand.
He obviously still has an obscene amount of liquid capital but he is nowhere near as stable or diversified as someone like Warren Buffet.
