He'd obviously run 3.38 the day prior, won the 800m that morning.
Thought in the final he may just hold back, run a 53 last lap to win in any kind of time. He takes it out in 58, 1.57 and 2.57 then with about 150m to go he clearly stopped his watch and progressively slowed down until he was at a recovery jog pace in the final 50m.
Almost certainly either his dad or coach were at the top of the final curve watching the time to see if it was worth him blasting it home but clearly it wasn't and so they just told him to shut it down. He must have run a legit 20 seconds for the final 100m.
It wasn't an intentional mockery but it was one. The kid in second Caleb Wagener is a very good runner in his own right - 3.46.9, but also has run 50.4 in the open 400m and won the NZ schools XC title (beating Ruthe) and he was just run into the ground. Honestly, in a pro field Ruthe would be capable of a Kessler-like (HS) performance. He would be in the sub 3.35 ballpark.

Just ran 1.46 solo backing up his solo 3.38 season opener ran yesterday . Not bad for 16!
As fast as one of the greatest Olympic champions in the history of the sport, from the same country, and on about half the training and in only his mid teens. I don't buy it any more than any of the other prodigies popping up like clockwork in the sport now.

Yeah we know, we know you're salty that the current era is eclipsed the era from 60-70 years ago that you've built your personality around.
It must be horrible for you, we send our thoughts and prayers.
Are you gonna keep repeating these same unsubstantiated bad vibes for his whole career?
Are we all really going to have to endure years of this?

His Dad & coach were up in the stand, his Dad recorded it all with his reaction. No one told him anything - the kid is allowed to race how he wants, he's not given robotic orders.
Wagener is also world junior duathlon champ (U19), a sport dominated by Europeans, so no slouch at all.

You haven't caught up with how the sport has changed, have you? You will endure as many years as people show they don't buy the myths about this sport anymore. That isn't going to end any time soon as the sport is never going to be again what you cling to.

If you are accusing a minor of doping, at least don't be a coward and say your name, "Crusty".

That‘s a bold statement with no real merit. Ruthe has been focusing on the 1500m/mile, barely touched the 800m. His ultimate ability over the 800m is completely unknown.. To run a 1:46 solo less than 24hrs after a 3:38 with very little training focus on the event is insane. Yes sure Lutkenhau ran 1:42 but this is his speciality distance with all his training aligned solely to this event. Not to mention he ran the time in the US senior men’s final event where he had other athletes to help pull him through. Imagine if Ruthe was to put all his training focus on the 800m for a season or two and run in a diamond league in Monaco or similar.
Maybe his future is in the 1500 but why not concentrate on the 800 for 2 to 3 years and move back up ?
I could see both Sam's chipping away at that national 800 record and add in james Preston to the mix .
Footnote ... the 1500 was solo but the 800 was not . He knew he had a race on his hands as he had never beaten Joe over 800 before. As it turned out joe tied up badly over the last 200 - 250 and the race was over but by no means was it solo.
You might want to watch the replay. There was not one point where Joe lead Sam. Sam lead from start to finish and always had several metres on Joe. No discredit to Joe however. He ran a great race and also dipped under the old record.

I believe the shoes make a difference, not only with training, but with times. His 3.38 is probably worth 3.41 which is believable for a highly talented 16 year old. Itll be interesting to see what he can do as he gets older, assuming he's still in the sport in his early 20s.

I'm accusing the sport of doping. That doesn't exclude minors. Feel free to stick with the stupid nickname you've come up with.

The shoes don't make 3 seconds difference. That is pie in the sky speculation. If they did then El G could have run 3:23. There is nothing now that can be trusted at face value in this sport. There is every incentive to dope and it's easy to get away with it.

That was before doping started to take over the sport. That is the biggest difference today.

what do you think hes on? epo? drug cocktails? i know the sport is a dope fest, but even i find it hard to believe hes on something. Its possible you know things i dont, but it is very dangerous for a 16 year old to pump himself with ped's. Doping young doesnt normally make for a long career, and then theres the health problems later on.

Doping has been around for a long time. There have been serious questions raised about Kuts. We know Robin Tate was loaded. The Italians were doing it in the 80s. It's probably more sophisticated now than it was fifty plus years ago and that's a big difference. But I'm not sure it's the biggest difference. I think professionalism and professional rabbitting have made as much difference and now we have the tracks and the shoes.
