It's a VO2 portable analyzer, why on earth have so many of you never heard or seen one before?
Posted on another thread, Bol (& training partner Saalberg) were doing a form of MAS Testing. And MAS, for the ignorant ones again, stands for Maximum Aerobic Speed, "a fitness assessment for athletes to determine the fastest speed they can sustain while primarily using their aerobic (endurance) energy system"
Saalberg had posted a video of herself being tested on a treadmill and then on the track; the footage of Bol was just on the track. I gather in this particular session they were running as far as they could in 6 minutes.
It’s genuinely concerning that you don’t know why she’s wearing this mask in training.
You're upset that I wasn't aware of what the latest $46,000 gimmick can do for an 800 runner?
I plead guilty. When I was coaching, I was too busy taking 1:53 Hsers and having them run 1:48 as freshman while making $13k per year. I certainly wasn't up to date on the latest $46,000 gimmick
Pretty sure she’s jumped into advanced Pure Hate training.
Expect Great Things!!!
Please don’t get all weird about Bol in the same way you did about Parker Valby. Some of us like Femke and your comments are off-putting. Besides, some of the comments you make are just really cringey for an old man to be making about a young woman.

Which is just a Billat test - been around for decades. Next they will do a Kosmin test as if that is new or "advanced". Reminds me of the Lactate testing that the Ingebrigtsens were doing a few years ago as if this was something new. Seriously, for a supposedly advanced technological country, sometimes the lack of use/understanding of modern training protocols in America is baffling.

Can you please explain to me what the hell it does?
Posting a quote for $34k and then describing it as $46k is peak rojo idiocy.
It's not a 'gimmick'. It analyzes the content of inspired and expired air to assess where someone is on the aerobic-anaerobic continuum. It doesn't do anything to make a person run better, it is just an analysis tool to help tweak the individual training plan. All you Jack Daniels fans may have seen old photo's of him measuring exactly the same, which much larger devised, while following along in a golf cart holding part of the machine. And you've all heard of 'the highest VO2 measured' stories, well this is exactly the same thing, only portable, not just in a lab.

You almost got it right…
JTD was captured in that picture using what’s known as a Douglas Bag named after Claude Gordon Douglas, British physiologist. A timed run over a specific distance, all oxygen and carbon dioxide are captured, brought back to the testing site. All you see is the collection, no measurements were done immediately.

Serious question: How would knowing a snapshot of your VO2Max today, for example, help with adjusting your training pace tomorrow? Wouldn't a pro runner already have a pretty good idea of VO2Max?
I'm not familiar with real-time lactate testing, but can't it be done on the track right in the middle of a workout? It seems to me that would be a more accurate way to test workout pace.
Could someone who is knowledgeable of field testing for VO2Max and Lactate Threshold comment, please?

Rozo thinks anything that he cannot spell is a gimmick. He and the moderators also have extremely thin skin that they deleted my beautiful image of his early XC coaching days.
There are other aspects of training and fitness that can be obtained from gas exchange the data, not just vo2max. Infact, for the 800 one could argue vo2max isn't even that important of a vague.
Depending on protocol, you could ascertained critical velocity (either the Tinman Schwartz value or the other critical velocity, which my professor defined as the minimum velocity you can sustain before eating into your anaerobic reserves (ones kick). You could also gain insight into her general gas exchange efficiency at different speeds. Vo2 Max and lactate threshold the are not the end-all be-all but tools in a wide array of data. Is wearing that apparatus necessary? No. But at her elite level with her resources why not explore every tool
