Moderating coaching threads is the worse. There are so many people who would die to be in the profession that they are always happy to pounce and rip on others. And I also think outspoken women are treated differently than men.
I believe in free expression but don't like the first post. Too much gossip and innuendo. The disucssion of weight in our sport is much different than it was 25 years ago. I don't care what someone may or may not have done 15 years ago. I care about now.
I'm just writing to say that I think I'm going to delete this thread over the weekend for being factually incorrect. I've confident that Furman doesn't weigh the girls and and post them so they can know who is the skinniest. If I'm incorrect about this, I urge a current team member or past one to reach out to me and we'll be happy to correct the record and write a story. I can be reached at Robert@letsrun.com or 844-538-7786.
Additionally, it said on here that the AD who hired the Garys is covering up stuff when the AD stepped down 10 years ago. So there clearly is just a lot of clearly false stuff on here.
My plan is to delete it on Sunday night for being factually incorrect. Last night, I started requiring registration to post and it's amazing how now one has posted since then. If you are going to try to end someone's livelihood, at least have the guts to do it under a registered name and not a VPN.
But if there is something I need to know about Furman that you don't feel comfortably approaching the school about, by all means contact me as I want to be fair. That's why I'm leaving it up for the time being.
While Iowa State is being dragged through the mud, it’s only fair to shed some light on what’s supposedly happening at Furman under coach Rita Gary. Rumors suggest she’s been weighing female athletes and posting their weights on a white board in a ranking system to show who’s the “skinniest.” On top of that, she’s allegedly had athletes hold 15-pound weights for extended periods, then remarked, “Wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to carry that much weight around?” Insinuating if you lost some weight it would feel nicer. She has been known to do this in the past. Wouldn’t be surprised if it kicked back up again.
Nice story. I am currently on the team and this is 100% not true. None of that happens at all. Letsrun hates strong female coaches and loves making up stories.
Hi Rita! You’re not on the team, you’re coaching the team. At least this is what is said on letsrun when someone makes a statement like you’re making. So is this an athlete on the team or is it in fact Coach Rita? Discus

Not sure if this investigation is true, I would doubt it, but it is worth noting on the massive Rita thread that she got busted posting from a burner while logged in to the Furman xc/tf IG account.
This isn't a race issue. The question is what is appropriate for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (college athletics in the United States) where some American students attend after high school, in addition to having foreign students. Most Americans are 18-22 years old. Those that go on to compete at the collegiate level are 18-22 years old. Do you think it's okay for this age group to compete against 25-30 year olds? What about the academic component? Are these older foreigners here to seek a degree? Why are some universities loading their rosters with foreigners? Should a certain amount of spots go to Americans graduating from high school? If we don't figure out a solution we run a major risk of losing potential American talent. Many of the East Africans are being trained at the highest level in their countries.
I can look up the weight of every college football player right now.
Not even remotely the same. Football players are not encouraged to starve themselves at the expense of their health, their bones, sometimes their lives. It has also been proven to not even make them any faster in most cases, but ruin performance.
actually it is similar. O linemen are encouraged to put on lots of weight... more than their frame should carry and that is not healthy either... i know talented guys who have quit football because they weren't interested in doing that... so same same.
and no, i do not feel distance runners should be encouraged to lose weight either
I find it hilarious but also sad how someone goes so out of their way to put up such a blatant lie on the message boards. There is simply nothing to be gained from this and only to be lost. This is the unfortunate downside of message board post like these, this is just completely false but will gain traction for all of the wrong reasons.

Coach Crow NAIA National Champions was a good kind of crazy
Coach Crow on the first day of practice would have a freshman hazing physical. When the Freshmen walked in the locker room they were required to measure their package 🍆 for length and width. Then he had a meat scale on a table. I couldn't believe they were doing this. At the end of practice he even gave out awards along with cash prizes.
