Detailed overview of social mobility by country, referring to the ability of individuals to move up or down the social ladder regardless of their background.
I'm one of those people; and I'm not currently even in college.
I was somewhat smart growing up. Went to a private school and met the average standards of 1250 SAT and 28 ACT for my school. Got into NCSU engineering with a perhaps bit of padding from my close family member having gone there; either that or the high school I'd gone to, my AP Chem score, and a few other factors.
Now I'm a nobody. I get gaslit like crazy at my job. I didn't learn how to negotiate people as a child. I was diffident and reserved and believed that I must bear the shame for everything. Now, like millions or B'ns of people, I struggle to see my value or capacity. The rich must see where they've been duly blessed and make strides toward alleviating the burdens of their fellow men
The starting pay at my company is $17/hour for answering the phone. That’s roughly $34K per year. This title is misleading.
I made $11/hr my first job out of college in 2001. I was making $44K per year within 3 years. Making $100K including bonus within another 5 years. No family connections, just hard work and got along with my boss that went to the same University and was impressed with my transcript compared to his.
I make more now, and I know a lot of people that make significantly more than me that did not do well in school. Being able to sell is often better than being intelligent in a capitalist society, unless you are Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg intelligent.
well yes, it's easier for people with work ethic and reliability to climb out of poverty.
Easier compared to what? Spain, Italy and Greece? No offense to Spaniards, Italians and Greeks, but I don't think "the land of opportunity" should be satisfied with being #35 in the world.

our social mobility numbers are deeply affected by our much higher immigration numbers, among other things.

Actually, immigrants have much better chances of moving upward than those who were born into poverty in the US.
Do you know how successful Indian and Nigerian immigrants are in the US?

Politics and politicians have nothing to do with your success in America. Go out and work for a living, doing anything you need to survive. Take responsibility for your own choices and for the effort you put into it. If you're only making $40k a year and you're not just starting out, it's because you were either dumb or lazy. I'll give a pass to people who had some terrible situation like they had to spend all their time, money, and energy taking care of a sick relative or something like that, those people are true heroes.
One of my kids is straight out of high school and spent 3 months getting an EMT certification and now makes $35k a year working a regular 40 hour a week job. In her case she's still going to school for something that will pay more but she could just as easily be working 80 hours a week and making 70k a year.
I spent the first 5 years of my job working 70-80 hours a week and stuffed all the extra money into investments. By the time I was 30 I had 8 years salary in the bank, and it was growing fast, and still is. I still work quite a lot of hours but I don't have to anymore.
Work hard, invest every penny you can as soon as you can, and you'll be glad for the sacrifice the rest of your life.
Or you can just whine and complain and be broke your entire life while you wait for the government to do something for you, which will never happen.
Maybe my message is harsh but the truth is that nobody has your back except you, so go out there and work hard for yourself.
