Another great read is The Courtship of Marcus Dupree by Willie Morris, much more than just a football read.
Would ya believe at 230 pounds Dupree took second at state in the 100m, got out leaned by soon to be world record holder Calvin Smith.

John Irving is one of my favorites modern day though he ran out of ideas after the first several great books.
Dickens is my favorite classic author.

"A Prayer for Owen Meany" is my favorite.
Simon Birch was the movie for that one. They took some serious liberties and the book was much better but the movie was a box office smash grossing $18 million on a $20m budget
I'll be serious for a minute. I'm reading "Heat 2" by Michael Mann. It will be a film in a few years. A prequel with DiCaprio as a younger version of Niel and possibly Adam Driver as a younger version of Chris. It's set in Chicago. Michael Mann is a director, buts he's a decent writer as well.
