Given the vulgarity of that post, I'm going to require registration moving forward on this post. Sexual assault allegations are not a joking matter.
No one is suggesting that assault is a joke, we're talking about selling books. Kara is attractive and probably sold a few books by including some salacious details about her relationship with AlSal. I'm not sure that Cain can generate as much interest, or sell as many books, no matter what she claims.
Cain isn’t attractive and doesn’t have salacious details about Salazar? I don’t know how many books Gaucher sold, but there is a small market for books written by distance runners and no one is going to make much money from them.
Where’s the chapter “I didn’t have the mental discipline to be a top athlete”?
I'll bite.
She clearly had the mental discipline to be a top athlete because she was a top athlete. Then, she switched coaches and training environment and faded.
Setting aside allegations of abuse, is it the young athlete's fault when they fail in a new system, or is it the experienced coach's fault?
I don't think either side bears full responsibility, but I think Cain would have been more successful in a program that was paying more attention to her mental wellness.
Is she going to milk this for the rest of her life? A track coach told her she needed to lose weight, she left that coach. Wow.. big deal, people leave coaches ALL THE TIME!

The issue wasn’t about mental wellness. She claims that Salazar pushed her to lose an unrealistic amount of weight, and as a result, suffered multiple stress fractures. If true, Salazar was a horrible choice to coach her.

I think so. This is how she earns a living now. She will probably move to coaching unless the rights to her story get optioned by Hollywood but she will continue going back to this story for decades.
but I hope a lot of the finger pointing is aimed at her parents. They did everything wrong. She has basically become the cautionary tale of HOW NOT TO DO IT.
Indeed the parents didn't do their homework, and blindly trusted Salazar of all coaches. Still, it was Salazar that screwed her up, all the way to becoming suicidal, while the parents were "just" bystanders.

You don’t know enough about Cain’s private life to make such harsh judgements about her. It’s far from impossible that she received a $5M or more settlement from Nike and I doubt she expects to make much money with a book.
She is now in Stanford medical school. Both of her parents are doctors.
She'll never struggle financially, IMO. Having wealthy parents helps! I'm truly sorry she was abused by Salazar, no sarcasm, but she's still ahead of 99% of Americans so she'll be fine.
Have many of you forgotten this was a creepy / weird 50+ year old man that has repeatedly been shown to be a drug cheat - who is clearly an egomaniac - with a 16 year old high school girl?? This was not a grown woman playing the victim card. Would any of you let your 16 year old daughter move across the country to hang out every day with a 50+ year old man, let alone allow him to weight shame her and push her to her breaking point? Why are we pretending like Al Sal is a harmless dude
He wasn’t creepy and he certainly wasn’t inappropriate around her. Pretty much everyone in her orbit told her and her parents it was a bad idea for her to join NOP but her ego was such that she would not listen. She then gained weight as she matured and was in a situation where no one sugarcoated that weight gain and world class distance running are incompatible. It was not a good fit.
I do wonder how much she is allowed to say in the book. If there are things that weren't proven in a court (drugs, inappropriate things that we aren't allowed to talk about in this thread, etc) can she say them in the book? Or does that open her up for a lawsuit?
In particular, the complaint states, “Salazar told her that she was too fat and that her breasts and bottom were too big.” Cain’s attorneys also allege that “Salazar and other Nike employees often made sexist and objectifying comments about female athletes, focusing on their appearance and weight, while they did not make similar comments to or regarding male athletes.”
The sports company's move came after the former teen phenom told a harrowing account of mental and physical abuse she says she suffered under disgraced distance running coach Alberto Salazar.
After placing 6th in the 10,000m at the 2011 USATF championships, I was kicked out of the Oregon Project. I was told I was too fat and “had the biggest butt on the starting line.” This brings those painful memories back. [Amy Yoder Begley]
As the people who were there confirmed Mary Cain’s story, the company Cain said endorsed an abusive system tried to undermine her credibility. Cain, one of the best American high school athle…

“I don't care what the science says! Her butt is too big,”
"creepy / weird 50+ year old man" is putting it mildly.
It's part of being a professional athlete. Football coaches tell their players all the time that they are too fat, or at times too small; it's part and parcial of what comes with making money with your body.
Being a good long distance runner means having a certain muscle to weight ratio, and she was not just trying to be "good" but great, in the very tip top .01% type great.
If you want to just "be who you are" that's fine, but you will not be getting paid to compete. You can run road races with the rest of the world and be really good at it, maybe even finish in the front pack, but you will not be Nike contract level good.
If you have a room temp IQ you understand that weight is a huge factor in distance running performance. Again, it was not the right move for her. She wanted to be babied and chose a team where no one was babied.
She should spend some deliberate time focusing on how her parents made a mistake by allowing her to be thrust into the adult world before she was emotionally able to handle this environment.
Lame deflection; I am clearly not arguing about the weight factor, Jack Frost and EZ10Miler. I am saying that Salazar was a creepy old man who repeatedly made inappropriate remarks about his young female athletes' "breasts and bottom", sadly even to the face of teenage girls in front of others.
Do you really think such behavior is not creepy and not inappropriate?

I would like to point out though that Salazar is banned and it's not because he didn't baby her. So it seems there a bit more to the story then that.
