I can run a proper workout in over 95/high humidity. Heat doesn't bother me and my times are better in hot weather than cold, which is fortunate. Having said that, 23-25C is probably ideal.
Are you not a wimp for getting weaker and slowing down at the end of your runs in the heat? Why not fight through it? Ironic you're calling people wimps.
I do not believe your post. Running speed and endurance is related to the bodies ability to dissipate heat. This ability is compromised in conditions of high heat and humidity. You can not get as good of a workout in high humidity with temperatures above 95.
Running into a cold driving headwind may slow your speed but you can get still get a good workout.
The wimp comment was unnecessary but used to add a bit of spice to the post.
I will grant you the an extremely thin runner can handle heat better and is more vulnerable to cold. But heat dissipation is still a major issue so I don't believe you can run as well in those conditions.
it depends what kind of a workout you're trying to do. i agree that a marathon is harder in the hot weather compared to the cold scenario. if you are talking about an 800m race it is easier in the heat. my coach always comments on how i train and race better in HOT weather.
I thought about that afterwards. Yes you're right. Dissipation of heat is not as a big factor in sprint workouts. And no factor in sprint races.

Freezing rain is pretty nasty, but you can get through it, and it's more mentally hard than it is physically hard. Now there was that one time I was running in the freezing rain and thunder and lightning showed up...
I don't like racing in the cold, but for most training runs heat and humidity are easily the worst. Particularly humidity. I'd rather have 90 degrees and the usual humidity that goes with that than a 75 degree dew point, which I got a couple times last summer.
Sure, your time in an 800 meter interval when it is really cold and the wind is in your face may be rediculously slow, but it will not have the same effect as long runs in extremely hot, humid weather. Long runs - really anything over 12-15 miles - in very hot (85 degree plus), very humid weather, especially if there is strong sun, are, to me anyway (and I have run in all kinds of the weather), the worst. They just knock the crap out of me. The pace is almost irrelevent. Once your body is depleted, its all over for the day.
I guess like someone else had said earlier, people respond differently to different weather conditions, and for me personally, I hate running in the winter. A bitter cold wind always manages to find its way through my clothes, regardless of how many layers I have on, and it's so damn hard to breathe when you have a turtle or a scarf over your mouth and nose to keep from getting frostbite. That's obviously just me, but I feel like I can go further distances in hot weather than in sub-zero temperatures.
blizzards suck bill bowerman can brag but try running through a 3 footer. i just pull out ski's and go when theres that much snow and wind(streets weren't plowed either so try running through that)

That's an excellent point, so much of it is mental. Appropriate dress and fighting the urge to start too fast when you are cold.
I don't know how many days I thought were too miserable to run but after I got out it wasn't so bad. Its mostly mental.

WIND...cold wind, hot wind...it's all the same. I hate the f***ing wind.

Are you kidding? Wow. I'd choose 85F weather anyday for a run rather than 45F. I love to feel the sun...it gives me energy. And trust me, I know cold. I lived in northern Minnesota and ran in wind chills of -70f. Straight temps about -15F to -20F.
I remember after months of running in below freezing temps, I had a short trip to Phoenix for business and did a 12-miler in the South Mountain trails in 95F. I just drank a ton of water right before and let it fly. I loved it and felt great. It was so nice to feel the sun again!

Phoenix's 95 is about a 70 in the South. I've run in Phoenix myself, and it was actually also 95 degrees. Great run. The humidity is what does it. I remember being in Las Vegas a few years ago and it was 110 and it felt fine. Go run in Houston, or Jackson MS, or Birmingham, AL when it's 95 and you will not have a great run.
I agree with mtn. dew. Try running in South Florida in the middle of the day - when the sun is out - in July for an hour and a half or more and then tell us how easy it was. One of the points of my previous post was that it has nothing to do with the wimp factor. Sure, we all react differently to different weather, but all in all, when your body is depleted, I don't care how tough you are, you are in for a bad day. Just check out the medical tents after 'thons on hot days.
