At regionals it’s a bit disappointing to see how things played out did Cal Poly, especially with Vanhoy at the helm. You know, he's known for being a time trial coach, but word has it that he's never actually run himself. Kind of makes you wonder if he really understands what it takes, right? California schools continue to disappoint
Tell us what coaches don't like Vanhoy? And why? What antics are you referring to? Give us specifics. I am sitting in a room full of coaches now and we all love the guy. So, I guess we are the ALMOST exception you are talking about, And every one else doesn't like the guy. The last 25 years they’ve had a few bright spots nationally but they dominate Big West and put a few points on the regional boards, that’s basically it. Van Hoy fits that mold.
Big West domination will end with Utah Valley and Hawaii joining the conference next fall. UCI also beat the women’s team for the track title. SLO won’t even be the big dogs of their conference anymore.

It’s very funny how as an outsider-who follows the big west- can see that the people in this thread screaming “it’s all one person who is jealous and they just hate Vanhoy” “there is amazing talent at SLO” “moderators stop this injustice about Vanhoy he is amazing” are very CLEARLY his boys on the team who desperately want everyone to think they are about to own the NCAA. Every coach has absolute garbage posted about them on this site. Some of it’s true and some of it is no where close to the truth. So stop trying so hard because it really exposes who you are and looks like you are maybe taking this way too personal.

Vanhoy's coaching at Cal Poly SLO no so good. It's disappointing to see only one athlete ever qualifying for NCAA's under his leadership in his three years. The program seems to be stagnating average as it has always been.
John Lester ran 1:47/4:06 in high school. That is great talent. Don’t know about anyone else, but the fact that he has gone nowhere with his running career with those kinds of HS PRs is telling
-He developed Eric Jenkins into a national title contender at Northeastern
-Went to Ole Miss, turned them into a podium threat in xc and a middle distance powerhouse simultaneously. Not an easy thing to do.
-Developed multiple national champions and pros over his career.
He's accomplished a lot, and he's done it without coaching at a traditional powerhouse program like Oregon, Arkansas or Stanford. If hypothetically the Stanford job came open this summer and their AD called me asking for a list of 5 names, Vanhoy would be on my list.
NCAA coaching is NOT easy no matter where you are.
Cal Poly is a unique fit. Good school, limited majors, very expensive in a very expensive area. Also not like the athletic department is packed with cash.
He is doing great there. Probably keep improving. It’s a natural build, not the easiest place to get 5 transfers every year.
