If a 3:43 miler could CONVINCINGLY outkick Bekele, then a 3:48 miler could possibly outlean Bekele in a tactical race. Not a difficult concept here.

Could go either way. But seeing Webb's improvements every year, with evidence of it this year, I'd lean towards him.
before the Bekele comparisons begin (btw they are the same age) Webb needs to break 12:50. After that compare them all you want.
I have personally witnessed Bekele run 1:51 for the last 800 of a 10k with a 24.something last 200. That is so far out of Webb's league that it isn't a possibility unless Bekele's has to carry his school books or something.

Yeah, these comparisons just aren't even fair right now. Bekele is in a totally different league. I am a huge Webb fan, but I would still bet against him at any distance from the mile on up. Bekele's 5K pace is 4:03. You think he can't run a sub 3:50??

I'm just speaking of a mile race or a slow 5K. Everyone knows that a slow 5K allows many more competitors into the race, especially a 3:48 miler with endurance.

Good point. I'm sure Webb could've closed faster if needed, but Bekele would've finished in 52.
people are forgetting that Bekele ran those tactical 5000s AFTER running the 10000 and he did say it left his legs dead. If Bekele were fresh in a tactical 5000, no contest at all. If he is doubling back and Webb is fresh, then it's a possibility but still at this point I'd put my money on Bekele. Bekele has put away other 3:48-3:50 milers in tactical situations....

I'm talking a slow 5K, where each runner is feeling very comfortable going into the last lap. Remember that 13:30'ish won the 2000 Olympics, so it could happen. I'm not predicting Webb would win...or lose. Just that it would definitely be a great race to the finish.
I think by the end of this season, this could well sound like an outside possibility. Right now is probably a little too soon. Once he's run close to 13:00 and 3:30 -- then I will think of him as closing in on the all-time greats.

Too often we treat fast times like they're very attainable. But after Webb's 27:34 (IMO he couldn't have done that last year), I think he goes 8:04 in the 2-mile, and is basically right with with the current mile and 5K U.S. records this season.
Last year (as an elite) he got his feet wet in the longer outdoor track events. He's better now, and with the 10K experience, he'll show it. Yea, I think he's about to take a big step this summer.
how tactical? 6 minute mile pace till the last 400, yes. running 13:20 pace or faster then kicking the last 400, no.
Craig Mottram has 3:48 mile speed and has superior endurance to Webb at this point and Mottram has yet to beat Bekele. In the long haul I think Webb could be an excellent 5k runner and possibly have a chance to medal at the world championships and olympics. Webb's 27:34 10k was extremely impressive; however, he is going to have to do drop a sub 13 5k before I even begin to consider whether he could beat Bekele.
Bekele, EL G, and Kipchoge- the WR 5k and 10k runner, WR miler, both of whom are Olympic champs, have both been outkicked by Kipchoge. If he could do it, so could Webb. But probably not until he can go low 12:50's.
Kipchoge did it once. when he was fresh and both doubled back. he lucked out that one time.

Um, you do realize that their mile PR's are nearly SIX seconds apart (3:43.1 to 3:48.8), and in case you did not realize it, THAT IS A TON OF TIME in a mile. (and EL G is OVER SIX seconds ahead of Webb at 1500m)
And while Webb might be capable of 13:00 this summer, at his peak El G certainly could have run at least 12:45. and FIFTEEN seconds is a ton in a 5k.
In short, when El G outkicked Bekele, he did so with waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better credentials than Webb has now or will will ever have at any point in his life (and though El G did indeed win decisively against Bekele in the Olympic 5k, it was only decisively in that he made the move at the perfect time and simply wrapped it before the line......But it STILL was very close. He only won by less than a second, right?)
Bottom line: comparing the two is, as many pointed out, really, really silly.
Sure ANYthing is possible, but against the greatest runner of all-time (bekele), who virtually never has a bad race, thinking Webb could outkick him in a 5k is really, really, silly. In a tactical mile Webb could do it. But mile does NOT = 5k.
