He did not drop down from the 5000 to the 800. He was always primarily an 800/1500 runner. He ran the 5000 in LA because it was ridiculously weak compared to the prospect of facing a fit and healthy Coe, Cram, Ovett, Scott, Abascal, Gomez etc at 1500
In 1988 he devoted himself to the 800 and even his 1500 speed clearly diminished.
In 1980, had Ovett chosen to double the 800 and 5000, he would have won the silver in the 5000 along with the gold in the 800. That's range.
Aouita's record as a coach as listed in the front article seems pretty suspicious. Not only does it claim he coached Khannouchi to a WR which I don't think anyone believes, it claims he coached Boutayeb in 1988-- which would mean he was coaching this guy to a 10K gold while he himself was training and racing at 800 meters all summer and in the olympics. Was he self-coached? Maybe he coached himself and boutayeb and trained together? I remember the rumor was that these two guys hated each other and didn't train together at all because Aouita was so secretive about what he did. I then states he coached Skah in 92, and Hicham El Guerrouj... I thought El Guerrouj was coached by his brother or something? I think this may be a case where the Moroccan "National team coach" is getting credit for whatever the best runners from morroco do. But even then I don't see how he gets credit for Khannouchi's WR. Does anyone else have information?
The coach of El G actually called Aouita out on this, when Aouita put it on his resume in his application for the Australian job.

First, 800m to 5000m is as rare as 400m to 800m. Roughly a 15% pace difference from 400m to 800m and roughly a 15% pace difference from 800m to 5000m.
It doesn't matter that S. Ovett won a Commonwealth 5000m gold, Ovett was not good enough at 5000m to earn a 5000m medal at Olympics or World Championship. Ovett would have finished 5th or 6th, 1980 Olympics 5000m.
No Kenyans, 1980 Olympics. Even if a Kenyan doesn't earn 800m gold, Kenyans affect all 800m championship races. Kenyans today are as likely to race negative splits, 800m as front run. For sure, 1980 Kenyans were 800m front runners. Eight-hundred meters without Kenyans is not a real 800m race. Stop it with this great Steve Ovett stuff. He lost to Jurgen Straub.

Yes, Coach Kada…himself the coach of many drug infractions (Kaouch, Driouch- this affair released his affiliation with the Qatari federation).
Mariem Alaoui Selsouli (Arabic: مريم علوي سلسولي, born July 8, 1984) is a Moroccan middle- and long-distance runner. She was born in Marrakech. At the 2009 World Athletics Final in Berlin, Selsouli withdrew from the 1500m fin...

Be educated and dont joke using other culture names.
We don't joke with Berber name, it's the rosbif that we get on the other side.

Nonsense. Ovett famously lost by a vest to John Treacy who finished 7th in Moscow, only because he eased up and waved to the crowd thinking he'd won easily. He also had a heavy cold that night that he had picked up in Moscow. He would have been 2nd favorite behind Yifter if he had entered. You do know he was the two mile WR holder, beating Rono who was in his best ever season? I imagine Ovett was in better 5000 shape in 80 than 78.
Doesn't matter that the Kenyans weren't in Moscow, they had no medal threat in the 800. How many Kenyan 800/1500 finalists from the last 5 years have been busted? Bett, Kipketer, Kiprop, Manangoi.
