I just watched last years SS girls D2 final. I knew El Toro had won. When I looked up the full results I noticed El Toro has 3 freshmen and two sophomores returning. This team won state D2 and finished 5th in the merger.

I know freshmen and sophomore girls don't always improve. If they beat the odds that devastate some of the girls when they become juniors this team maybe at NXN the next two years.

According the CIF Central Section sports calendar they can't have a meet until 9/1. So how does this happen?

Grace Smith of Claremont maybe the biggest surprise this fall X-Country season. As a freshman she was 6th at state in 17:45. Very good Woodward freshman time.

Smith then goes onto get second at the CIF state meet 800 in 2:07 (negative splitting the race).

That kind of strength and speed for freshman is rare. So don't be surprised if she toes the line at NXN this season.

SJS should see a pretty good battle between Whitney, Oak Ridge and St Francis.

All are in different divisions, but the same league.

My CA rankings with some notes on their known basic roster changes (although there's lots of unknowns about incoming Freshmen and transfers):

Top 3 CA teams should go to NXN.

1. Buchanan lost their #3, 6, 7. Who cares? They'll dominate. Their super freshmen from last year should improve, of course... and I'm sure they've got a crop of new Freshmen this year, as always. They'll win State, and could win NXN.

2. J Serra lost their #2 from State (Polay was usually their #1), and has 2 super Freshman coming in. Elbaz is better at shorter distances, so her being #1 might not be good enough for them, but they're so deep, they'll cash in on their annual trip to NXN.

3. Del Norte lost their #2. With a few seniors, they will podium in D1. Might even find their way to NXN. Hong was the #2 soph in the State.

4. Santiago lost their #1 (Blade) and #3 and they supposedly have a super Freshman coming in. They're well coached and are always in the mix, but Braelyn Combe can't do it alone, so all those other Seniors on that State Champ 4x800 team need to step up this year without Blade.

5. Oak Ridge - Only lost their #1. Young team, and they can do some damage this year.

6. El Toro lost their #4 and 5, but the rest of team is very young. They could end up #2 on this list if the youngsters improve faster than everyone else's upperclassmen.

7. Saint Francis lost #3 and 5. Young and hungry, and could challenge El Toro for D2 State title.

8. Trabuco lost their #1, 4, 5. Enjoy 2024, your run is probably over.

Whitney was 9th in the merge and ahead of Oak Ridge last year and lost no scorers. You might want to throw them in there somewhere.

The San Juan Hills standout, Carol Dye, is transferring to Santa Margarita- with her on the team, they could possibly take the DIII state title

I stated on an NXN post the southern section girls transfer like crazy, some of top returnees that have transferred in the past Wilson, Hopkins and Combe. There are many others. So until the season starts it's hard to predict who will be top team. One think for sure it'll be a teams from the southern section. Not dissing the NorCal team, I'm a huge fan. I ran in the CCS back in the early 70's. The southern section is just so stacked. A team that gets one or two news transfers can immediately become an NXN contender just like Trubico Hills did this past year. And lastly what super freshman will come in a help their team,

Sorry old timer but picking the largest entire section isn't much of a prediction. You could do that same prediction for every division. Southern Section has the biggest advantage because their schools are so much bigger than the other teams in their same divisions. Until they sort that problem out Southern Section will continue to win most divisions.

It's not a prediction. It's a fact. For 50+ years I've been saying if you're a California Southern Section Champion (any sport) you're one of the best in the USA.

If the school districts in Southern California are the same as there are in my area then they have open enrollment. This means based on your home address you're scheduled to go to school A, B or C etc. In my area there are 7 highs schools in the district. If you apply for open enrollment then you can attend any school in the district. So if your address is in school A's boundaries you can attend school D.

If you look at the transfers these southern section kids are transferring to schools that are in fairly close proximity, so they may have open enrollment.

This doesn't apply to private schools. They can recruit from anywhere ( we've had British kids play basketball at one of our private schools).

The cross country divisions are based on the amount of students at each school.

Let me help you out here. In the Southern Section a Cross Country D1 school is 4500-2400 athletes and a D2 school is 2300 to 1900 for example. I just checked another section and D1 for them is 3000-2000 and D2 is 2000-1700. That is not equal and the State divisions are not the same across every section. Make sense?

I get my info from the CIF. I was never confused.

Did you read my post? You are getting your info from CIF Southern section website and not CIF. Do you understand that the Southern division school sizes are much different then the other Sections?
