Shots fired at OK ST and all the Kenyan athletes coming into the NCAA. But I’m not sure if his model at Tennessee of recruiting 30 freshman a year was any more beneficial to American athletes
Is Carlson really complaining when he had enough Nil to find an xc team and STILL bailed when things weren't going well??

I don't know Sean Carlson, I did like the video and the message of developing home-grown talent. The overflow of international talent began back in the 1970's with UTEP, and the NCAA had to implement two categories of All-American status. One for foreigners and one for Americans. I'm all for international athletes participating in U.S. Collegiate races, but I do feel there should be a limit per roster. Perhaps a 70/30 split of Americans to foreigners? This would allow coaches to bring in experienced international athletes while at the same time having them 'Coach Up' talented American runners. Coaches need to coach, and not just recruit ready-made international NCAA champions.

You don't get a bonus for home-grown talent, do you? Beyond the relative ease of just recruiting in state, who cares. This is NCAA sports. This is about winning.
No one would complain about the "foreigners" if they stunk. Parker Valby could beat them. Whatever happened to being up to the challenge and being better?
I think what is awkward is that it is atypical for a high school athlete to do anything but go to college post graduation. You hear of a few stories of a gap year or a mission but it makes up such a small percentage. So you take a high schooler at 18 and you drop them in a system which is dominated at the top by athletes with 6-8 years of physical maturity and experience over them. I don’t know if you call it unfair but the progression/expectation of an American athlete versus international appears to different by not automatically going right into college. So it becomes obvious and or hard to compete unless you obtain these 23-26yr old international athletes. The only benefit or underlying story is that it appears to have made a positive impact on the quality of American athletes. We are seeing great times/performances by young Americans that didn’t exist. We have American frosh running times that would typically win or be top 5 at a national championship during certain periods of time over the last 50 years. How to manage the NCAA standards are beyond confusing to me when what is right and beneficial are seemingly far apart.

Dude destroyed then gutted a program when he left. Zero room to talk.
Carlson is so awkward with his athletes, I get he’s the new guy but he has no presence. He feels like a substitute teacher or camp counselor.
Yea you nailed it. But remember he’s only in his 2nd year of full time coaching. He was only the Men’s Coach at Notre Dame. I am surprised by his lack of confidence and presence. Let’s check back in after XC but definitely a guy not used to coaching women.
He does have Simon Kelati...likely his number one runner who's Kenyan, right?
son of Eritrean immigrants, I find it interesting Carlson’s best athlete ever is a son of Ethiopian immigrants. and his best current athlete is a son of Eritrean immigrants. Yet he is so vocally anti-immigrant in the NCAA. Wonder how these athletes feel about this rhetoric

How sure are we that Carlson wasn't in the process of getting Kenyan's to Tennessee?
I don't know why anyone would have an issue with foreign talent. Did anyone see the Olympics? Home grown American talent can compete with anyone. The bigger issue is the age situation. There should be an age cutoff in the NCAA. I would probably suggest 24... though I'm sure many would tell me that is too young and some its too old.
Uhhh... I do believe there is a healthy population of international students attending American universities without prejudice. This is simply a case of developing American athletes in their home country which should be a priority if in fact we want to compete on the world stage (Olympics, World Champs, etc...). Nothing wrong with a bit of nationalism, the ENTIRE world does it. I'm all for helping less fortunate athletes from foreign countries, but only to an extent, and not compromise the development of our homegrown talent. We need to take care of our own backyard before extending out to take care of someone else's deficiencies. A 70/30 split allows both American and foreign athletes to benefit. If not enough Americans choose to participate, then fill the spot with an international athlete. Coach wise, there's nothing wrong with inheriting or recruiting international athletes of which may be older and or more experienced, but to build your program with mostly foreigners isn't appropriate.
Look at Univ. of New Mexico's men's roster. What a FREAKIN' joke! Coach Gauson is a tool and should be ashamed! UNM's AD should also be ashamed for allowing this to happen. There's a lot of American talent in the Southwest, and Albuquerque is a great place to train.
