Sure, but their 4:35 boy is a soccer kid that ran 17:26 last year despite being a 4:36 miler at the time. Plus, he did race. He ran at the Boise Relays and looked awful before dropping out.
The one who didn’t race this track season is Jack Davis. He was the only Rocky sophomore who raced at state and the NXN championship race last fall
What I'm saying is that yes, Jack Davis is missing, but the 4:35 boy isn't as relevant in cross country as his 1600 time might appear. He probably won't make their varsity squad next fall.
I agree, Rocky looks completely destroyed for next cross season. Would be lucky to place at state, Looks like the younger runners are starting to stagnate and they only have Tuft and Kurtz for next year and they are both seniors, nobody else is even close, start focusing towards deserving teams like CDA and Boise who can actually develop talent and compete.

Jeff Howard is a good coach and can develop talent. Sometimes you don't get a run of talent the same way that you did before, and I think Rocky is experiencing that right now. Their top freshman and sophomore 3200m times are 10:14.80, 10:14.87, 10:15.91, 10:22.79, and then 11:10. They do have two good milers that have run 4:35 and 4:46, but they are more 800m guys.
FWIW, Boise has 9:45, 9:46, 10:05, 10:28, and 10:31 for freshman and sophomore 3200m times.
I agree he's a good coach, but they are just all over the place and have been for quite some time, and I'm assuming their top XC sophomore (Davis) is injured? Haven't seen a result for track yet, not sure though. So that probably affects them for next season as well with the lack of depth they face. Not a good spot to be in if your Rocky.

He did also inherit a premier program. Rocky won state cross in 2016 under a different coach and had 1600m times of 4:23, 4:24, 4:27, 4:27, 4:30, 4:36, 4:39, 4:42, and 4:49. The 4:23, 4:24, and one 4:27 graduated out, so still a very strong team, especially in 2017. Rocky has also won a dozen straight titles in track.

The problem is that Jeff Howard doesn't have an established middle school pipeline like CDA has. That's not a knock on CDA, they've done great for themselves, but it is a built in advantage that every other school in Idaho, including Rocky Mountain, does not have.
If you don't have that kind of pipeline (Newbury Park did, Great Oak did lots of outreach to middle school, CDA does) then you are going to be extremely susceptible to the ebbs and flows of talent. These next couple years will be when we get to see if Jeff Howard can be regionally competitive without a stacked foundation to work with.
FYI on Jack Davis - My understanding is that he was on the F list, at least at the beginning of the season. Could be injured or could be kicked off the team, or could have quit the sport. I don't really know.

So Jack Davis is a question mark on if he will even return. He has logged only 15 miles over the last 2.5 weeks and isn't part of the Rocky Mountain Strava group.
Rocky's top 7 appear to be Hyrum Tuft, Thomas Kurtz, Beck Miller, Harrison Loscher, Jonah Bennion, Joshua Wren, and Ray Clark. There's a real possibility that Rocky Mountain only returns two boys that qualify for the varsity district meet (or have ever run a time that is sufficient to go).

what about Dylan Anson? He is a transfer from another school (which he was top 7 for freshman year), and as a sophomore, at Districts, he was #9 for Rocky (#4 nonsenior)
From what Jack posted on Strava over the winter, I wouldn't be surprised if he either quits the sport next year or transfers, it appears he unfollowed most of the Rocky athletes as well in addition to his mileage being all over the place and now it looks like he isn't running at all, not sure at all what the root cause of this is, could be an injury? I have no idea. If Rocky wants to even have a chance next year, they need someone new to contribute because their 7 as of right now looks like the weakest version of Rocky I've ever seen. They do have the coaching to pull it off though, can't wait to see what Jeff can do with the lack of talent this upcoming Xc season. Just my two cents.
It’s definitely possible! With the right development and strong team performances at regionals, Rocky Mountain ID could qualify in the future. It’ll be exciting to watch their progress!

Unless he has a valid reason that is documented i.e. bullying, Jack Davis will sit out of varsity competitions a year if he transfers.
It truly goes to show how entitled Coach Howard has made these kids, I mean like Evowire said if you dig deeper on Jack Davis’ strava it’s just him complaining about every little thing that doesn’t go his way, it is probably for the best if Rocky doesn’t have to deal with him after this season. Yes he is talented, but the over inflated ego along with the fact that he doesn’t seem like a good teammate at all through the stuff he has publicly put out there. Just seems bad for the sport and toxic for a team trying to rebuild and if he really is transferring which who knows where he would go having to sit out a year of varsity, it’s unfortunate the waste of talent that comes with that and that’s a huge loss for Rocky. Not trying to hate on a student athlete or anything, just quite unbearable what coaches nowadays put into their young athletes to make them like this.

What's crazy to me is that this troll isn't even trying to be factually incorrect, while simultaneously thinking it's appropriate to slander and "hate on" a 15-16 year old kid on a public internet forum.
Jack Davis's Strava isn't private at the time of this post. Go check it. I only checked back to the last week of March, but he doesn't mention his team or coaches a single time. Heck, he doesn't even title any of his runs except for maybe 2 or 3 out of those 13-14.
He may be toxic, but considering that there is nothing on the Strava's to indicate this, this poster is either Jack Davis himself (which makes the slander acceptable, but shows he has a separate set of problems) or it's another Rocky kid who has beef with Jack Davis. I don't know which is worse.

I feel like there's enough speculation that it may turn out that Jack Davis is just not a good fit for Rocky Mountain and that we won't see him race again for them.
If he doesn't, where does he transfer to? Owyhee, Eagle, and Meridian are the closest schools. Eagle has the best freshman and sophomore class of those schools, but Boise has the best freshman and sophomore class overall. That might matter to him if he is looking for training partners and to be on a competitive team, although Boise and Eagle might be less likely to put up with bad behavior because he won't be as much of an impact as he would be at other schools.
Rocky is really going to be in rough shape without him. Their top 3200m times for those classes are 10:14, 10:15, and 10:22. Anson, Majors, and Uechi ran 10:27, 10:27, and 10:41 in their HOKA race. A top 5 PR average of 10:21 for that class isn't exactly stellar.

Kind of a concerning trend: 2025 freshmen and sophomores: 10:21 2024 freshmen and sophomores: 10:08 2023 freshmen and sophomores: 9:55 2022 freshmen and sophomores: 10:02 through three, and then it drops off, but they were thin in the fall of 22 and Hunter Hill transferring in changed things for them. 2021 freshmen and sophomores: 10:05 if we are counting Hunter Hill's time from Texas, and with Sainsbury only having a 10:16 despite being a 4:25 sophomore.

ocky Mountain ID has definitely shown some strong performances over the years, but qualifying for NXN would require consistent top finishes at regionals. It might take some time, but with the right training and strategy, it's definitely possible. I’d keep an eye on their progress in the upcoming seasons
And their only soph who was in their top 7 last fall hasn’t raced this year yet

Wouldn’t be surprised if he just sticks with soccer in the fall if he makes varsity for soccer

Definitely a real possibility. Their team is looking better, though.
9:27, 9:57, 10:05, 10:15, 10:15 for their top 5 lifetime bests. 1600 times are 4:22, 4:26, 4:34, 4:39, 4:45 for the 1600 if you exclude the soccer boy. The 9:27 and 9:57 are rising seniors.
